I am a professional church musician. I play at, and get paid for, the Saturday vigil Mass and the Sunday morning Mass where I am employed as the music director. I have been wondering, because I get paid, should I be attending another Mass or do these Masses fulfill my Sunday obligation?

Somehow, it doesn’t seem right to profit from going to Mass when it’s an obligation to attend Mass. On the other hand, I depend on this money for my living and I think it’s just that I get paid. It would be great if you could shed a little light on this for me. Thanks!

Look at it this way: The priest, in a certain sense, is also being “paid” for attending the Masses he celebrates and is not obliged to attend another Mass to fulfill his Sunday/holy day obligation. The same is also true for a permanent deacon.

Don’t worry about it. In fact, you might even be grateful to God that your talent for music makes it possible for you to attend more than one Mass each weekend.
