I was going to give an umbrella to a poor person (because of the heat). But the umbrella is the property of my parents, so should I rather ask them first before I give it? What if they say no?

The umbrella is your parents’. You need to ask first, if they say yes, then all is good. If they say no then you need to respect that as the umbrella is theirs. Got any spare money lying around, how about going and buying them an umbrella?

Wow. I think we are getting carried away here. Yes, a minor child has received everything from his parents. But for the most part, parents don’t track every article of clothing, book, video game, cd, etc ever given to a child. Once the object is his, he can give it away if he choices. (Parents don’t have the obligation to replace it though).
In the case of this specific umbrella, if you borrowed it, then no you can’t give it away. If it is the umbrella your parents gave you for your own use, then I believe you can give it away. But, don’t expect your parents to give you another, or be quick to lend their own, if you do. Perhaps the better plan would be to buy an umbrella from your allowance or work money to give away.

If I gave my kids umbrellas for them to use and they gave them away without my permission, I’d have a problem with that. I no more expect them to give away their umbrellas than I do their toothbrushes.

Yes, I agree with this. If my kids wanted to spend their own money to purchase something to give away, that is their choice. However, if I spend my money on something for my kids to use, then I expect them to use it, not give it away. I would not tolerate my kids taking my things and giving them away, unless I had made it clear it was something I no longer had a use for and wished to donate anyway.
