My mother forbid me to go to mass today because she thinks i may be to extreme about my religion. Should i still go, and thus not obeying my mother?

The OP asks** : “My mother forbid me to go to mass today because she thinks i may be too extreme about my religion.

Well, first, if you decide to go to Church anyway, you will probably make your Mother MORE convinced that you are too extreme in your religion.

Second, it might be Good for you to take a couple weeks off from attending Church, so you can prove to yourself that you are not too extreme about your religion.

You didn’t say how old you are, so, the answer may change …
If you are less than 12, you should probably obey your Mother’s wishes.
If you are about 16, then rebellion is probably pulsing through your veins, so maybe you could “Stick it to Mom” to show your independence.
If you are 25, then maybe you should sit down with Mom and reason things out.
If you are 40 (or older), then Church may be your ONLY reason to Live, so you better go to a Mass, QUICK.

I guess it would depend on your age bracket? do you know what makes your mum feel this way?

As indicated by the previous replies, there is too little information to give a truly good answer.

It would seem that either way one is committing a serious sin.
Obey your mom and you fail to fulfill your Sunday obligation.
Fulfill your Sunday obligation and you fail to obey (honor) your mother.

I think that the question here may be - What would Jesus want you to do in this situation?

The best path might be to obey your mother, but to dedicate that hour to prayer.

Moving forward - it think it necessary to get your priest / confessor involved in this. Maybe you ARE becoming too extreme. It can happen that one gets off track in this way. Perhaps your mother just doesn’t properly understand. We just do not know.

I am sorry that we cannot be of greater help.

Presumably we are talking about Sunday Mass? And you haven’t already, for example, attended Saturday evening Mass?

Every Catholic is as a general rule obligated on pain of mortal sin to go to Saturday evening or Sunday Mass, and the fact that your mother thinks you may be ‘too extreme about religion’ (whatever that means) does not exempt you. We are to honour our parents but that obligation ends when they command us to do something sinful, and missing Sunday Mass without good reason is sinful.

If you have a devout and knowledgeable Catholic counsellor or psychiatrist whose professional opinion is that attending Sunday Mass specifically is such a huge problem for you that it specifically should be avoided, that would be different.

Going to church isn’t extreme behavior, so there must be something (or multiple things) that you are doing that has lead to her to describe you as being extreme about religion (even if she’s simply overreacting). I would figure out what “extreme” things you are doing and perhaps decrease or adjust those behaviors, for both your and her sake. Don’t let religion drive a division between you two if you can manage otherwise. Don’t forfiet your religious life by any means, of course, just try not to let it wedge between you and your mother in a negative way.

Having taken a quick look at the other posts you have made, I suggest that you obey your mother and stay home.

It is obvious from your other posts that you are very young in your faith (regardless of your physical age). Your questions mainly speak to is this or that a sin. You may even tend toward scrupulosity…We cannot know since you have only posted 6 times.

My advice is that you hang around CAF some and keep asking questions. More importantly - make sure that you have access to a good regular confessor who you can talk to about some of these things.

Please tell us - is your mother Catholic? What is her belief system?

How old are you? How long have you been Catholic? Are you confirmed yet?

Part of being a Christian is that many people will try to diminish your faith. If you asked her, would your mom attend Mass with you? Jesus said, “Whoever places his mother or father, bother or sister, son or daughter ahead of me cannot be my disciple.” This is the first thing that came to my mind when my sister told me I was too religious. You and your mom…I would have to say, “Mom, I love you. My faith is very important to me. I want to live a holy life. I hope you understand.” Might work. Take this situation to God. May the Holy Spirit enter your hearts to be equal on this. Responses above contain some highly valuable posts to your question. Praying for you.

Not going Sundays would put you in mortal sin. I don’t know your age but your mother is wrong. Of course, you can’t tell her that.

I have to wonder if this is really about you becoming too extreme in your religious practices. If you are a minor however, you are bound to obey your mother. You can use your time away from Mass in prayer.

It might help if you explained why your mother feels this way. Are you going to Mass on Saturday and too more than one Mass on Sunday? Are you involved with other Church activities: why does she feel you are being too extreme?

I had family like this, but they were not Christians and anyone that went to Church was viewed as a fanatic. A little more detail would help others discuss this better with you.

I think this is your best response. I think its true you dont quite give us enough information. First I am assuming you are Catholic and that your mother wants to restrict you from going to Mass entirely for the week. Like this poster is implying , if the issue is you are going Saturday already and you mother doesnt want you to attend Sunday as well, or visa a versa, thats one thing. But if you are Catholic and shes objecting to you getting to Mass at all, thats another thing! You need to go to Mass despite what your mother says. It is not violating the Commandment to honor your parents to disobey her on this! God does not give parents permission to tell their children to do wrong or evil things by making children obey everything a parent tells them. You need to be respectful and loving when you go, but if you are old enough to find a way to mass on your own, then I think you should get to Mass at least for you Sunday obligation, which could be either the Saturday vigil or anytime Sunday.

I cannot help but think that there is a lot more going on here than we know.

As a number of responders (including myself) have said, there is just too little information given…

This child is apparently struggling with matters of faith and life. S/he needs to be getting good guidance from a regular confessor / spiritual director.
