Lately, I have become a catholic resource to a co-worker of mine, “Sally”, who was baptized catholic, but never really got into her faith.

She also has a friend, “Elaine” who attends a local protestant bible church who gives her the “other side” of the story. Elaine, also a friend of mine is very nice, but tells Sally many misconceptions about Catholicism. Sally then comes to me for clarification (i.e. “worshipping” Mary) and I am able to set her straight.

Elaine has since invited Sally into her bible studies and to her church, to which Sally has shared with me just how much more enjoyable her church is as compared to a catholic mass that she just feels disconnected from. I invite her to come to mass with me and she is just disinterested.

Sally has deepened her faith through Elaine’s church and now wants to be baptized again. Problem is, her baptism is going to be at someone’s pool next weekend and she wants me to be there to witness her special time.

I informed her that since she has already been baptized and confirmed within the Catholic church, she didn’t need another baptism. She says that now she is an adult and feels that she needs to be born again and re-washed in the love of Jesus.

I’m torn. Should I go? She is not doing anything wrong is she? I am happy for her to be walking closer with Christ, which is the bottom line, right? And if she feels that this is something she needs, o.k… But I’m afraid that if I go, I’ll just be rolling my eyes (internally) and get really angry that we (the church) lost another one to the protestants. Her family (all catholic) has decided not to go and encourage her, which gives us “intolerant catholics” a bad image. If I don’t go, then it would certainly appear that catholics don’t support anyone if they aren’t catholic. Surely it would create some more misconceptions. I want to support my friend. It’s not like she is marrying someone of the same sex or doing anything immoral…

Her dunking is in just a few days, so a prompt reply would be appreciated! Sorry for rambling.

Hi,

I didn’t notice any mention of a concern for the truth in this whole matter. She likes the other church because if “feels better.” We aren’t Catholics because it feels good to be a Catholic. We are Catholics because Jesus founded only one Church and the Catholic Church is it.

If the Catholic Church is the one true Church, then it would follow that you would not do anything to encourage a person to leave it and go to another–regardless of what some people will say. Stick to the truth and don’t be a wimp!
