Should I have been sterilized for medical reasons?

I am the mother of three. My gynecologist has told me that my uterus was badly thinned and that a tubal ligation was a good idea. Was it a sin to do so even though my health was compromised? Am I required to abstain from intercourse with my husband? That would not go very well.

You should not have been sterilized, even for medical reasons, because direct sterilization for any reason is grave matter. All that needs to be done to regularize your status in the Church is to repent and go to confession. The Church does not require you to reverse the sterilization or abstain from intercourse with your husband.
