I spend an hour each week in Adoration. I had responded to a posting in our parish bulletin asking for people to come to cover the different time periods in the rectory chapel. When I called I was told they already had the time slots covered but that I was welcome to come whenever I wished.
Even though I’m not the assigned person, I still go at the same time each week which happens to be the last hour of Adoration. I’m often the only one there and sometimes come in to an empty chapel. If our Parochial Vicar is around, he will repose the Blessed Sacrament at the conclusion of adoration but the task really is assigned to a Sister. The problem is sometimes Sister isn’t around and neither is anyone else. I usually stay until someone comes. Once I was blessed with the opportunity to stay with Jesus for almost 4 hours.
Today, there was another person in the chapel so, after my usual hour, I left. While I was letting the secretary know that there was another person in there, I asked if was anyone around to repose the the Blessed Sacrament. Everyone was away and she didn’t know when they’d be back. While we were talking, the other person left.
I continued on my way but am thinking I should have gone back in even though I had already “left” and wasn’t really the last person there. There was no real urgency for me to leave. True I was starting to feel a bit iffy from hunger (I’ve been having some stomach problems for the past several months) but I really just wanted to go home. I’m thinking I could have stayed for awhile at least. But then what if it was hours? Still I keep thinking if the table was turned, Jesus wouldn’t have left me. What is the proper thing to do? Is this something I need to confess? I’m not usually scrupulous but this is different. We’re talking about walking out on Jesus! I honestly can’t believe I left without something urgent that needed tending to.
Thanks and God bless.
