Should I have the Eucharist

I am essentially wondering if this would be a mortal sin (for purposes to do with the receiving or not) although I suspect the answer. I was talking to my Dad on the phone. Him and mother don’t get along well so when I talk to him I make sure Mom is not around. We’re in England and he’s home. We were talking about some protests happening home. The way I summarised them was “So basically these people think a lot like Mom. They throw a tantrum, scare people at first and then throw another tantrum that doesn’t have the same effect and are upset that their second tantrum has not worked.” Before I said this I was debating whether it would be ok or not in my head and for some reason I thought it would’ve been ok. Now Mom is very agressive at times ( I do mean very agressive for reasons that cannot be counted as legitimate) but I thought I had gotten over that and forgiven past incidents. After I said what I did say I realized it might’ve not been an ok thing to do. Would this be a mortal sin and would I be fine to receive next Sunday or not?

Mortal or not, why not confess it at reconciliation? You’ll be covered, and you’ll have healing.

I will but the first opportunity for that is only after Mass on Sunday and I’d like to receive.

I get that, but if you have any question about it, you should abstain. This happened to me this past summer - I was heading out for vacation, ran into some problems, which led me to sin requiring confession. I was not able to get a confession before I left. I tried going to confession at the parish at my destination, but the priest was unavailable. I was upset that I was unable to receive, but I abstained. I also called my home parish and made an appointment for the afternoon I got home.

Can you make an appointment with your pastor?

As to your question about whether it’s mortal or not, there are three elements. Serious matter, full knowledge, and full consent. From your narrative, it sounds like you have consent. Is it serious matter? Well, I don’t know. Stating facts isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The reasons why you would state them may take it into the serious matter. I don’t think anyone on this forum is going to be able to answer that for you. Again, if in doubt, assume it’s mortal and abstain until you can reconcile.

That is a question for your priest. You can call or email your priest and ask your question (he cannot give you confession over the phone/computer, but, he can answer your question and arrange to hear your confession in the sacristy before Mass.)

Cheers. I guess there’s also a huge guilt aspect to it. I’m over sensitive and idiotic so yeah. If it weren’t mortal I’d sleep a bit better but fair enough nobody here could say that. I guess I said it because I thought it funny, I figured it sounded a bit like gossip but since it was Dad I thought it would be ok but then I realized there was an extra layer of it being my Mom we were talking about. Nevermind cheers.

You did not commit a mortal sin and if you felt God calling to receive Holy Communion, you should.

The fact that you had to ask if it was a mortal sin, means you did not have full knowledge of what you did in the first place, which is required for a sin to be mortal.

Don’t fall into the trap of scrupulosity, you’ll never grow closer to God as a result.

Fun fact: I just prayed about this before opening my phone and getting the reply. And I also told the same joke to my Mom and she didn’t get upset so I guess I’m ok. Thanks.

Well if it was just a joke and you all knew it and it wasn’t meant as disrespectful…

But, like others said, safety is the best policy…
You don’t HAVE to take the Eucharist when you attend Mass every time.

I realize I didn’t answer anything.

NO, it;s very unlikely talking to you’re DAD would have caused scandal

STILL it was uncharitable and should be confessed as a Venial sin.

Pray for your mother
