Should I just go with it, or should I be concerned?

Im no entirly sure if this is a sin or not. If it is a sin what knind of a sin?

I have this dress for prom and yes in the wordly atpmosphere it’s perfect! But spiritually? maybe not so much. I can fix it to be modest, i am not worried about that, but when i came home with it my sister was telling me, “yeah its a beautiful dress, but it’s too much of an ohhh look at me!” She was also telling me that as a christian we need to be simple and try not to stand out too much in a materialistic way or else it could effect humility in a negative way.

Also i feel bad, because since it was so exspensive, i feel like i could of had a better use of that money. Not only was it exspensive it was also paid by someone other than myself and i dont want to cause problems by not wearing the dress, but at the same time that’s for god to decide.

Unfortunatly, it was final sell and i cant return it. should i wear a more simpler dress that i have or it will be okay to wear this dress?

I know this sounds silly to be worrying about a prom dress when there are bigger fish to fry out there, but i think its crucial to do the best that we can in this world to be a good example of Christ.

Lizzie, it is okay for you to look as pretty as you can for your prom. Your sister apparently objected to the dress precisely because you look your best in it.

St Therese of Lisieux said, “It seems to me that humility is truth.” Humility is not beating yourself down and looking as unattractive as possible! If your intentions are modest and you behave with decency and respect, there is no reason for you to refrain from wearing your pretty dress. It is the intentions of our hearts that make us materialistic or non-materialistic, not what we possess. It’s the intentions of our hearts that God sees.

When Jesus was asked: “which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:35-40 NKJV) So above all be kind and loving and respectful in your intentions and acts.

Enjoy your Prom

The Church does not teach that it is wrong to have a special dress for a special occasion. Girls have a special dress for First Holy Communion and for Marriage!

If you wore this super special dress to Church, or to Walmart, that might say ‘look at me’. To wear it for the special occasion in which others will also be wearing a special dress is not sinful.

It is not wrong to have a special dress, and it is not wrong to want to look nice for a special occasion.

This could become sinful if you focused on your looks all the time, wanted to have numerous expensive dresses, spent an overly large amount of time concerned about your appearance, or were immodest in your dress.

Doesn’t sound like to me you are any of these things.

Enjoy your dress and your special day. Also, the person (i.e. probably your parents) who bought you the dress loves you and wants you to have something special. They will receive joy from this. It is not wrong.

Just ignore your sister. Wear your lovely dress, feel beautiful, act with modesty and Christian virtue and have the best night your life!

I will definetly be keeping the advice in mind and enjoy my prom! and the dress too of course!

is she jealous? isn’t a prom dress by definition supposed to be oooh look at me I’m so pretty? what would she suggest a denim jumper and a turtle neck? as long as it is modest or a little lace and tulle can fix any problems, what is the problem?

No i dont think that it’s jealously. Well actually im not entirly sure!

She has a very kind heart and is devouted to the catholic faith, but i think she just has a differnent perspective on appearnce. She was just saying to be simple and stay away from materialism.

I apologize if i made her seem like she was being rude or something. She really wasn’t! she was just saying her point of view and i was actually thinking maybe the dress is too much. That was mainly because of the price i think. Overall i just need to keep a good heart and enjoy the dress!! :]]

GOD BLESS!!
