So i got two situtation in which i don’t know if i should listen to my mom.
  1. First, i have been told by what i believe are reliable people concerning this, that my former class-mate is smoking and probably tried a drug. He is in “hanging out” with bad company according to people who told me about this. I have told this to my mother and she won’t let me talk to his mom about this. I understand, firstly have to make sure that these things about my former class-mate are true. But he may be destroying his life. And my mother stricly forbidd me of going to his mother. Why? Because i cannot mess with someone else’s bussines. What should i do?
  2. Second. I have grown more religious over last year and before i was a “normal” secular guy which believed in God but that was it. I have now started obeying all laws including “red light” and laws like this. And i always refuse to break these laws(only if im morally forced to break them). And my mother and father think im weird. That internet is affecting me in bad way because i learn about morality mostly here. There have been alot of conversations with my mother about my growing wirdness and what is going out with me. She has limited my “access” on religious sites on internet and now he is thinking on limiting my internet access. I need these sites including these, because they are helping with my relationship with God and my awerness of Christianity. Should i obey her?

  1. Sounds like your mother is right in this case, from the way you worded the post. You say it’s a former classmate, not your friend, or even present classmate. And you heard it from other people. Regardless of how reliable you think they are, it’s all hearsay and rumor unless you see him doing it. No need to mess with other people’s business.
  2. I don’t know the real you, only what you post. But it is entirely possible to be “too aware” of sins, and become scrupulous. That’s not a good thing. Like I said, there’s no way to have enough information to say either way. And if your mother has that much control over your internet, I’m guessing you’re either a minor, or rely on her to supply your internet, in which case, you have no choice.

Tim,
I agree with the answer above to your first question, and wanted to add a little something to the second. At a certain point we have to start praying. Do you have a Bible and/or a prayerbook? Spend the time you would spend on the internet in prayer instead, or in prayer and helping your parents around the house and becoming a better student, etc. Don’t let your mother think, hmmm, his religousness seems to consist of spendinga lot of time on the internet and criticizing my every move while I’m driving. Let her see your religious expression as getting closer to God and being more virtuous in your current state of life as a son and student.

Having been a teen and a mother of teens; it’s galling, but yes, and do more than listen - obey.

I don’t know all that you’re reading on the Internet, but even Catholic Answers is far from perfect; there are a lot of opinions. If you want good reading material, talk with your priest and ask for recommendations.

Remember that the Commandment says to honor your father and mother–and this means even if and when they may be unreasonable–and I’m not saying that your mom isn’t being reasonable. I have no way of knowing her or what she is really objecting to in your changed behavior. I have 5 grown kids and as a parent, I know first hand that any change in what a parent sees as a norm for their kid is often met with a little worry–been there, done that! (“Acting weird” is a rather broad term.) However, if you’re being conscientious about a red light, how much more so are you obligated to obey your parents?

On the other hand, it sounds like you may be in a rather secular-oriented family but that you feel the need to know God a little better. I agree that even a site such as this may not be the best way for you to do so. Talk to a priest, read books and attend Mass as often as you can. Pray–often and every day. Also remember that you will be 18 sooner than you think. Even a year seems like forever to you, but it will pass faster than you know. Jesus lived with and obeyed his mom until He was 30. You can do so until you’re 18!🙂

Listening to gossip and then wanting to act on that gossip is just as bad as the gossip itself.
Its none of your business. Listen to your mother.

Timi,

You should listen to your mother on both questions as with (1) she is helping you to avoid the sin of detraction and with (2) it is not immoral for her to limit your internet access.

Internet forums are not the only way to learn the Catholic faith. As has been suggested to you many, many, many times by other members of these forums you should get a copy of the Catechism and read it and consult with your priest as to the gravity of the sins which you may or may not have committed.
