I have been dating a guy for almost a year now and I being only 21 see myself marrying this guy. He is unlike any other guy and he truly respects me and my family. When we first started dating I knew he was seventh day adventist, but didn’t think he was that strict with his religion because we would hang out on Saturdays.

After two months of dating he started bringing me to his church and I am catholic, but do not attend church or practice any beliefs. I was a little hesitant to go to church, but after going I thought it was a enjoyable and relaxing thing to do. We continued to hang out and see each other on Saturday, but ten months into the relationship he told me that he wants to be more strict with his religion. He doesn’t want to go out on Saturday, instead he would just like to go to church, read the bible and watch sermons on youtube. I want to be with him, but I want to be able to do things on Saturday, such as going out with my family and friends.

Another big issue is that if we were to get married, how would we raise our kids? He had told me that he wouldn’t allow our kids to go out and play with friends because it is suppose to be a day of rest. My boyfriend and I also both play tennis and we both competed in tournaments on Saturday. He told me the only reason he was allowed to compete on Saturdays was because he was playing for god and thought he had a chance of going professional.

I also talked to both Catholic and Seventh Day Adventist pastors to get their opinion on this and both have told me completely opposite views. One would tell me that it is impossible to work things out and another has told me that it is all about compromising. Unfortunately, I don’t think there are any compromises with my boyfriend because he is hardcore Seventh Day Adventist. Could someone please give me some advice? Thanks!

Seventh Day Adventism and Catholicism are diametrically opposed to each other and they are generally virulently anti-Catholic. Your children would need to be raised Catholic and for that you need to be active and devout in your own life.

These links should be helpful in refuting Seventh-Day Adventists. CAF staff apologist Michelle Arnold grew up as an Adventist and has also written on the topic for Catholic Answers.
