Friday night, Early sat mornng I went out with some friends. On the way the way home we stopped at sheetz so they could go to the bathroom/get something to eat. They were all at least slightly intoxicated at the time while I didn’t drink at all the whole night. So I waited in my car, and the one kid i was taking home pulled a few beef jerky’s and cheese and crackers out of his pocket. I asked if he stole it, and he said yes. I basically said he should pay for the stuff, and I would give him the money if he needed it. He said he had the money, but he stole the stuff anyway.

That was basically the end of it. He got away with the theft. Anyway, I feel/felt bad about it that i didn’t press him harder on it, so I send an anonymous letter and a $20 to Sheetz for the items. I intend to go to confession for this, and other stuff ASAP, but their is no confession on Sunday. So is my failure to do something more on this shotlifting incident a mortal sin, and hence i shouldn’t receive Communion tomorrow?

I’m not a moral theologian but it seems you did not yourself participate in the theft, and you tried to get him to correct his action, and what’s more you have repaid the victim for the theft committed by another - so IMO I don’t think you are in a state of sin because of this. You are not responsible for the actions of your companion.

Well I could of refused to leave until he paid…or better yet not put myself in potential occasions of sin in the first place

Yes, it is always best to avoid occasions of sin, but an occasion of sin is not, in fact, a sin.

It will not, of course, injure you to abstain from the Eucharist tomorrow, and if you are feeling convicted of sin that may be your best option. But I would not be surprised if your confessor were to tell you that you were being scrupulous - feelings are not always the best indicators.

What sin do you think you may have committed?

Exactly which of the Commandants did you break?

Hi Booter. I don’t think you did something grave and since you even did reparations for an evil that you did not directly commit I believe you may go and receive Holy Communion. I do hope your friend who stole the items has realized the sin he has committed.

While it wasn’t necessarily true in this case, I think the reason i was concerned overall is b/c my worst sins tend to be sins of omission (Not speaking up or trying to do the right thing when it has to be done). Probably b/c I just don’t want to deal with confrontation with my less religious peers. They tend to know where I stand on issues, I just don’t want to get drug into sin by hanging out with them. They have always been my friends for years but they’ve changed and I haven’t. I hope to set a good example for them, but I’m afraid at times they are dragging me down a lot more than I’m bringing them up. Thanks for all the replies.

Jesus hung out with sinners and we drug Him to the Cross…

you’ve already gotten the replies answering your question, you have committed no sin and should go to communion,
but i’d like to add, this theft was only a petty theft, and not necessarily mortal, although still a sin, and it is still good that you have made repairs for the theft, but don’t worry so much about the act that was committed as much as the state of your friends life,
although when we help or instruct or admonish someone, it should always be done with love and patience, but even that is not as important as just the example we set for others by how we live our lives, and also by our prayers for them,
i would suggest, since you had the money to pay for those stolen items, perhaps you would also have the money to have a mass said for your friend, because that would help a great deal more, and would also please God more then simply making repairs for a stolen thing which no one would have missed anyways, because it’s not the item being taken that offends God, it is the carelessness and intent of the act that offends God, and the example and effect it has on others,
we much more please God and appease His anger by doing penances, which is what makes reparation for your sins and the sins of others,
and really anything which makes you suffer, even the smallest sufferings, can make reparation for sins, which you do simply by accepting suffering, and by not complaining or showing you are suffering, which should be done with joy and love for God.
for example, bearing patiently with the faults of others, or being silent and not defending yourself when someone is unkind to you, anything that you suffer can help make reparation for sins and help convert sinners.

so although it’s good that you paid for the stolen items, and i’m not discouraging from doing this again, but if it happens again, or if you witness your friends committing any sins, then also consider on top of whatever else you do, to also make reparations for these sins.

and one more thing…if there is no confession on Sundays at your church, then i would suggest talking to your priest about that, there should be confession before mass, receiving communion is very important and essential to our lives, and if he does not want to…then at least simply ask on Sundays before mass(at least 15 minutes or a half hour before) if he can hear your confession, he’s really not aloud to refuse you if he has the time available to him,

ok well that’s all, hope this helps you, tc.
