When I was serving at Mass things didn’t go the usual way during the offertory and I was confused as to how this happened. During the preface of the Mass I was mulling this over in my mind. I thought to myself that I needed to stop I did but then started casting my mind back onto those thoughts. All of this happened in less than 2 minuets. I still received communion as I was quite sure my actions were not mortally sinful. Does is sound as thought I was correct.

On the side members of my family were watching a TV program that at times can be quite uncharitable and mocking of real people. I continued to eat my tea half watching the program but when I could sense the presenter was going to mock someone I didn’t really do much to stop myself hearing the uncharitable comment. When he mocked the person I giggled slightly.(thats not sinful because it wasn’t planned) But did I fail to avoid a near occasion of sin? Or are near occasions of sin like alcoholics in pubs or people prone to lust going to a nudist beach?

It sounds to me that you have scruples that is An unfounded apprehension and consequently unwarranted fear that something is a sin which, as a matter of fact, is not.

Nothing you have mentioned rises to sin. Please get a good spiritual advisor and rely on him.

if something went wrong at Mass it is the priest’s problem, not yours. Even if you made a mistake, that is not a sin unless you willfully, purposely committed a sin with full knowledge and intention to sin. Any time you ask yourself “was this really a sin?” the answer is no, because it shows you had neither knowledge or intention. If you regularly spend this much time worrying about minor actions being sinful you need the priest’s advice on how to combat scrupulosity.
