Should I pray before I speak?

I received a text message today on my day off from my boss to ask me to sign a medication form the next time I am in work that apparently I forgot to sign. I replied that I had signed it (which I did) and asked why somebody had contacted you that I hadn’t. I said either they are trying to get me into trouble or they are unable to understand what is written on this sheet. I receive a reply that I am blowing things out of proportion etc.

If I forgot I would nod my head, apologise for the mistake but as I did my job properly I get annoyed that this happens.

Should I pray before I communicate with people? If so, would I need 100 Hail Mary’s?

Thanks.

When I’m upset? I like to write out my answer just the way I feel about it.

Then I don’t send it. I wait for at least an hour. Then I cut it back down to something normal and send that.

So should you pray in between that? Sure. Doesn’t hurt at all. I like leaning on the rosary for stuff like that. It’s a good way to be sure. Because by the time you’re done praying that there’s just no way you can still be as worked up as when you started.

That’s my take on it anyway.

Perhaps you should assess the situation before you go into defense mode and say things like “they are trying to get me into trouble or they are unable to understand what is written on this sheet.” The mature response would have been “will do,” look into it the next time you are at work and either comply with the request if you did not, indeed, sign it or show him that it was already done.

Your boss is right; you are blowing things out of proportion.

It helps me to make a habit of thinking about what scenario would make other peoples’ actions seem reasonable. When someone is driving aggressively, I think: maybe they are running late for their flight or their loved one is in the hospital. And then I let myself shake my head at their behavior and let it go.

In your situation, I would think: Maybe I misplaced this form, or maybe someone filed it incorrectly, or maybe my boss misunderstood a conversation he had with my coworker. I would tell my boss that I’d take care of it first thing the next day.

If this were an ongoing problem? I would do my best to inquire politely about what was going on, and as much as possible I would let others believe it was my own mistake (even if I didn’t think it was). I would ask: Have I been putting forms in the wrong place? Have I made a mistake filling them out? Is there anything I can do to help make sure this doesn’t happen again?

Only after all these steps were exhausted would I take the matter to my boss. Even then, I would do my best to remain calm, and simply explain that there was an ongoing issue that I could not resolve.

Of course, you can think of all these things as prayers–I don’t, because this has been my practice since before my conversion. But: pray to God to understand others’ points of view and pray for your own ability to remain calm in these situations.

Wishing you all the best!

I agree, and do the same in my professional life. I call it “restraint of pen and keyboard.”

I agree, your answer was exceedingly defensive. You could have just gone into work, signed a form, and said I know I already signed this, but here goes. It is not like he was saying “please sign your form which you so stupidly neglected,” no need for finger pointing or defending anything. Just a simple, “ok, I will.”

Do people think you blow things out of proportion???
Look at your response:
100 Hail Marys.

Yeah, you probably do. You response should have been : Oh, I’m sorry I really thought I had. No worries. I’ll take care of it, thanks."

Instead you made accusations, and blew it out of proportion.
I don’t think prayer is going to help. You need to adjust your defense reflex.
Just my 2 cents. 🤷
