I already have a Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance**. Should I also purchase a Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words**, or will it be unnecessary?

lak,

Just a suggestion but save up a little money and buy some software so that you will have all this stuff in one program.

You can go to Bibleworks.com or logos.com for some very high end programs that will have several of the Catholic translations as well as many evil anti-Catholic translations such as the ESV or NIV.

You can also visit your local Christian bookstore and get a fairly good idea of what is available for a less expensive option.

I’ll check into the software. Do you know if Borders has any? I have $70 of Borders gift certifcates that I haven’t used since I didn’t know what to buy. As for the NIV, I don’t think it’s evil, just not my particular taste (too much dynamic equivalence. I like a more literal translation. I cannot comment on the ESV, since I never read it.). I would probably like to check out the Christian bookstore, but I have Borders’ gift cards that will expire if I don’t use them.

I have both Vine’s and Strong’s as part of my Logos software. This is for people really doing bible research not just study of the Bible. The difference is, these tools really help you research the original language words, and see where else they are used in the Bible, to help understand their true meaning (not rely on translations).

By study of the Bible I mean reading, reflecting, and using good Bible Commentaries (multiple, they all have some inaccuracies IMHO) to better internalize God’s message of salvation.

That said, here is what I pulled out of Logos to show how they work together:

Vine’s includes both Old Testament and New Testament words in this complete expository dictionary of more than 6,000 biblical words from the original Hebrew or Greek. When you put Vine’s Expository Dictionary together with the Logos Library System and Strong’s Numbers you have a link from the original language to the exact Strong’s number which can be researched further in any other lexicon or reference work you have.

I was just being scarcastic about the NIV.

I’m not sure if Borders has anything along the lines of software or not.

My Strong’s** says that it has the best of Vine’s**, so I guess what I need to know is how much more would I be getting if I also purchased a separate Vine’s**?
