Hi! This is my first post. I wanted to ask a question regarding confession. Years ago, when I was much younger I had sexual thoughts and used to masturbate. I didn’t know it was a mortal sin. I knew it wasn’t right, but didn’t know exactly how bad it was. When I grew closer to God I stopped completely. I don’t think I knew, even then that it was mortal. Some time later I went to confession. I told the priest that I had had thoughts that were offensive To God. I recently started wondering if I should have been more specific, and said that they were impure thoughts? And when I confessed the masturbation, I confessed it as sins against purity. The priest didn’t ask for more information. Should I have been more specific??

This was years ago, I haven’t done any of those sins ever again.

IMHO “against purity” were keywords and so even if specificity is appropriate, your confession was likely understood, and the priest would have requested clarification at that point if he thought it was needed.

To be mortal, the following three criteria must be met:
  1. It must be grave matter (serious - see below)
  2. You must know it is grave matter
  3. You must willingly consent to commit the sin.
Like the fire triangle, omit one and the sin is not mortal. Want more clarity? Get a compendium of the catechism.

Also, an examination of consceince is a great help. This is the best I have found so far.

Not that you do, or will, but try not to worry about confessing the same old sins. What do you want, new sins? That’s supposed to be a joke, but it’s true. Be satisifed fighting against the sins you have. Better to fight against a small army than a large one.

Youve been forgiven from that confession. Not understanding specifics doeant matter as long as you were truly repentent. You can always bring it up in your next confession. It wont hurt anything.

When you go to confession you confess your sins to the best of your ability. Sins you have truly forgotten or ones you didnt truly understand the full extent of are still forgiven as long as it was a true honeat and full confession to the best of your ability. Only thing that makes it invalid is if you purposely leave out sins or are not truly repentant.

Should I have been more specific??
It appears, reading through the thread, you might have all the answers you need.

However, if matters still bother you, you might want to schedule a time outside the normal confession time(s) to make a general confession, which is one that looks back over your life.

I say outside normal schedule, as it sometimes can take a good bit of time, and there may well be others behind you who would not be able to confess because of the time it might take you. Additionally, you might feel rushed if there were people waiting as you entered.

Just a thought.
