Should I sketch naked people

Don’t know if this is the right place to ask this, if its not please move this thread. 🙂

Anyways, having to be a fan of thirty minute sketches, is is alright for me to try (note the word try ) to sketch naked persons, men and women? Is there a set way to sketch him or her (should the subject show some wort of emotion, a bit of personality?)?

If yes, is there a place where I can gain inspiration for drawing this theme? Something not pornagraphic?

I know the great artist of the past sketched subjects that were naked, but I still felt that I needed to ask.

I also thought this would give me a greater sense of appreciation for the human body (mostly women’s).

A naked body is a creation of God and is not inherently evil. It is when the body becomes used for obscene purposes that it becomes a problem. If you are just sketching for practice or art, then I don’t think it would be an issue.
 
Hummm not sure about this one honestly.

Certainly if it is a near occasion of sin (mortal …as for example lust)

one should avoid it.

But i still wonder about just choosing to do so…for ordinarily to see a naked woman for a man is a near occasion …

(except of course ones wife…

or a doctor his patient and the like…but even then he takes care…)

My cousin used to go to Kent State in Ohio. He had to paint nude for a required art class. He skipped the naked male nude painting day but came to the female nude :D. The professor scolded him for spending too much time painting and focusing on the females breasts. What exactly did the professor expect with a bunch of 18-20 year old boys in the class? :rolleyes:
 
Took a drawing class and at first was surprised the models would be totally nude. You just don’t look at it with lust. You get into what you are trying to achieve and it becomes another exercise.

I’m sure if I had studied to be a nurse, my first encounter with a naked man would have caused me to pause too. But you do it in a professional manner.

I think this is for you to decide?
Can YOU handle looking at a naked woman without being aroused/lustful?
If you can, Go for it, If you can’t, avoid the occasion of sin.
 
Certain older moral manuals were not in favor of it if one could avoid it …as i recall.
 
In the context of legitimate art, I believe sketching nudes is fine. After all, didn’t artists who created some of the finest works of the Renascence for the Church need nude models for their work? I’ve never been to a nude sketch class, but I believe there isn’t anything pornographic. As long as you are there for the right reasons and not just there for a cheap peep show then I then I would imagine you are in the clear.

Doesn’t really surprise me but I do find it disingenuous considering the Sistine Chapel, among others, has many nudes including the derriere of God. If it is okay to look at nudes, how can it not be okay to draw them? If Michangelo hadn’t painted them and the Pope hadn’t hired him, we wouldn’t be looking at them.

First of all, go to a good art supply store and look over their “how to draw” books. Or to a good bookstore. You should see something helpful there.

Second, if you don’t think you can handle drawing actual nudes, don’t do it. I took art classes and life drawing classes. For me, there was nothing provocative or sexual about the poses. The instructor pointed out certain things to look for regarding line drawing and light and shadow. The human body must be looked at with respect. If you think you can’t, don’t.

As long as the sketching doesn’t result in personal fantasies about the person, or that an inappropriate relationship doesn’t develop because of it.

The best place to do this is in a drawing class with other artists, where the rules are in place and enforced. It would be a very bad idea to hire a model and then have her naked in your home or private studio, with no one around to corroborate that the only thing you did with her was make a few sketches.

Try your local art school, university, or extension classes with the City. 🙂

I was 17 when I started Art School, and it was expected that we were all intending to become professional artists. The professor was in the right - anyone in my classes who had behaved like that - male or female - would have received a failing grade and would not have been permitted to continue in their studies, back in my day.

Yes… my first encounter with a naked man while caring for him caused me to pause. Now i don’t even think twice!
