My son lives quite far away and my wife and I are planning a visit. He is living with a lady about his age. He has an ample home. Should we stay with them on our visit or book a hotel to express our disapproval (and he knows how we feel)?

One of the principles of hospitality is that you never accept hospitality that you are not willing to reciprocate. If you would not allow your son and his “partner” to stay overnight in your home, then you should not stay overnight in his home. This does not mean that you cannot visit with your son, or that you cannot enter his home. It just means that it very likely would be better to stay in a hotel during your visit to his city.
