Should I Still Let My 15 Yo Sleep With Their "blanket"?

Aw gosh–this is embarassing. My 15yo son recently found his “blanket” he was so attached to as a baby, pulled it out of the closet, washed it himself, and sleeps with it. What to do? I think it’s harmless. I haven’t even mentioned anything to him yet, cuz I don’t know how to respond.

There’s no moral issue here, so why create conflict for no reason?

DD took her bankie to college with her, then when we moved she gave it to her cat to ease the transition–that was the end of the bankie.

You might casually mention that you noticed that he has the blanket and ask if it brings back pleasant memories of his childhood. (Or remind him of who gave him the blanket or something similar.) Don’t expect much of a response, but just bring the subject up in case he wants to share. I also think it is harmless. A friend’s son took a piece of his “blankie” to college–and he is a very well adjusted young adult now at 27.

It’s just the blanket, right? He’s not sucking his thumb, or taking the blanket to school?

IMHO, talk with him. Let him know your curious about his discovery. Forget the right/wrong question.
If he gets to be 21 and he wants to take it to work, well… 🙂

A blanket? No biggie whatsoever. Some parents are worried that their 15 year old sons are sleeping with their girlfriends.

I don’t see that there is a problem with it and it doesn’t seem like anyone else does either…I wouldn’t even bring it up. Let him have this link to a more innocent time.

I slept with all three of my dolls through college. My mother still sleeps with her bear and my dad with his armadillo. My husband still cuddles into his Snow White blanket in front of the TV. I remember many a fight while we were in high school in which my sister and I would “punish” the other by hiding her favorite doll. There was nothing that would cause a bigger firestorm in the house. We all knew messing with Mom’s bear was taking your life into your own hands.

I agree. There is nothing wrong with it. And, if your son is the sensitive type, I wouldn’t ask him about it unless it honestly was a matter for discussion. (Say, he brought his sheets down to wash but not the blanket and you asking if he could bring it down, too.) Some kids wouldn’t care, but if you think it will embarrass him, just don’t worry about it. You already know the answer to anything you could ask. I guess my point here is not the asking but the intention; don’t rib him about it or bring it up just to be able to say something. (Which, from your post, it doesn’t sound like something you’d do.) I think it is cute…

As long as he doesn’t walk around with it and take it outside the house I would not worry about it.

Um, I still have my Paddington Bear and I am 30. True, I don’t sleep with it but I still give it a big hug when I see it. 😃

my 12 yr old daughter still sleep with a stuffed bunny my mom bought for her before she was born, in fact, she has to have it to sleep, she rubs its ears, they are velvety, she forgot it during a weekend trip over this summer and oh, the tears, Hey, they grow up way too fast, so I say keep the blanket 😃

I have my baby blanket with me at college sorta. It’s actually one comforter of a two comforter set that I have had since I was about 3. My mom gave it to me (well, I have both since I got my hands on my uncle’s one too 🙂 ). I love it to death. It’s just nice to have something with me that I’ve had for so long!

Let him keep it. Don’t make a fuss. I think it will be just fine. No relation whatsoever to my blanket (aka “cat”). No sirreee. Never had one, nope! 😉 Anyway, it will eventually crumble to dust, I can assure you of that.

I loved my sheepskin…stole all my sibling’s and used it for myself…the fur was so comfortable to sleep on and the underside was nice and cool for the warm summer nights…did that until i was about 12 and lost it 😦

My son who is now 29 has a Winnie The Pooh collection. He has one favorite one who is just one month younger than he is. As a teen, when Winnie would be on his bed, I knew my son had “things” he was dealing with. When my son joined the Army out of high school, Winnie went with him and sat on his desk. He told me Winnie was much respected and his fellow soldiers knew not to “mess with Pooh” My son has passed some of his collection on to his 2 y/o. And to this day my son’s nickname is “Pooh”

remember Radar’s teddy bear? it went into the MASH time capsule in one of the last episodes. don’t know why getting comfort from an inanimate object like a bunny or blankie is any dumber than from what we use as substitutes when we get older: collectibles, comfort foods, or even drugs.

I wouldn’t make any big deal out of it.

My nearly 14 YO son still sleeps with his, as does his 12 YO brother. One has been patched so much, you can barely recognize it anymore. About a year ago, I casually made the suggestion when he requested yet another “fixing of the blanket” that maybe we should just throw that one out and go find another one. I will never make THAT mistake again!!:bigyikes:

Be thankful he is sleeping with childhood blankets, not teenage girlfriends.

PS. I have a close family relative who still sleeps with stuffed animals. He is a police officer in his mid-30’s!!

Haha.

I am 23, a mother of one and one on the way, and I have slept with my blankie every night of my life, as long as I can remember. Yes, I took it to college with me. No one cared. My husband doesn’t care, though he does throw Blankie out of the bed on occasion. 😉

I love my blankie.

My kindergartener grandson has already made it known to family that his blankie is going with him when he grows up and leaves home. I have made each of the grands a blankie and love the idea that they’ll each have it when they’re adults.

I have a ripped up and very worn mini-quilt made for me by my aunt before I was born. It’s pink and I still have it around. 🙂

My best friend has had a yellow receiving blanket from when she was a baby and has used it for her entire life. It is in shambles, but she washes it regularly and sleeps with it nightly.
