My daughter is 26 and has been raised Catholic, she met and fell in love with a jehovah witness 8mths ago and he has just moved into her home. Do I stop visiting her at her home?
He is not practicing his religion at this time but to avoid conflict she has stopped attending mass.

Red lights, and sirens, started going off in my head as soon as I read your post. This could be an emotionally abusive relationship. In the past, has she ever had problems saying “no”? Whatever is going on, let her know you love her and want whats best for her. Visit, but be careful to not push her to change things.

I have to be careful myself not to preach here. I was in an abusive relationship myself. And it doesn’t have to be physical to be abusive. Walk carefully, but be prepared to stand up for what you believe is best for all concerned.

That is sad. If her faith means anything to her then she is betraying herself and that isn’t a good sign for the quality of the relationship.

You can only continue to show her love, and courtesy to her boyfriend. She needs prayer, and to know she can come to you if things go wrong. I ask God to be with her and her boyfriend to make things happens as He wishes.

I feel for you. I ask God to comfort and be with you, Trishie

Start fasting and praying, and going to the Divine Liturgy (mass) as much as possible for her.

Thank-you all for your comments, I have been praying the rosery daily for her and offering up my masses…yet today I couldnt help but feel a bit lost, your prayer support and words have brought me back some focus.
I am trying to be strong in faith and stand on Gods word, John 15:7 says If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you; big words with a big promise, there should be room enough to stand on that eh?

Judy, I’m not sure whether you asked your question solely because your daughter is co-habiting or also because you also have other concerns eg why did her boyfriend move into her house and whether not attending mass is at her boyfriends instigation.

If you do have any of these concerns, or others, I think it is very important that you maintain strong contact with your daughter including visiting her in her home.

You should keep visiting your daughter! In fact, you should visit her more often under these circumstances!

Try not to be too judgemental because this could have the effect of really putting your daughter off the faith. I think you should just be supportive and try to gently point her in the right direction.

Luckily, her boyfriend is not a practicing Jehovah. This means he probably won’t try too hard to convert her. However, you need to learn as much as you can about the Jehovah Witnesses faith so that you can evangelise to your daughter. There is a possibility that he will give your daughter literature in an attempt to convert her; and you need to be there to refute his arguments and show her the truth of the Catholic faith.

Now is the time to get really close to your daughter. She needs your guidance and influence. Otherwise, she may convert and your future grandchildren may be brought up as Jehovah’s!

You need to pray hard, and you need to ensure that your daughter’s boyfriend is not given the opportunity he needs to convert your daughter. She needs someone to show her the truth, and that you are that person.

I will keep your daughter in my prayers. I think that she could be with a bf who is controlling…just from the little I read here. Not certain of course, but for her to give up mass to ‘avoid conflict’ why is she doing this? She is not married to this person? I think I would just keep talking with her about this, not at the risk of nagging…she is an adult, and can make up her own mind. But, for the sake of her soul…I’d keep talking with her, and explaining that no one should ever keep her from the Eucharist. If someone loved her, he wouldn’t expect that of her.

I’m so sorry–this has got to be terribly difficult to watch. My prayers are going out to you!!

Our second son just moved in with his girlfriend. This, in spite of a Christian upbringing, Mass every Sunday, and going to catholic schools. Our hearts are very sad.
Yet, I try to look on the positive side. He loves his GF very much and she is a lovely, sweet girl who makes him happy. They do plan on getting married. She is kind and respectful and is helping him finish college.
So, yes, I go and visit them, and love them, and cherish them. And sometimes I even drop little hints like, “Why don’t y’all just get married?”
And I pray, pray, pray!😉
