I’m presently in the process of discerning my vocation and I have found some orders/communities that I am interested in. As it is going to take me about 2 1/2 years to clear my debts before I could even think of applying for entrance to a community, I was wondering if it is too early to arrange visits to the communities I am interested in or should I just go for it now?

Many thanks for your help 😃

Go for it! It’s never too early to look into a community. In fact, while you’re resolving your debt issues, you may be able to attach yourself to the community as an oblate and study up for your novitiate. God bless!

It’s like I was telling another discerner–as the debt goes down, one’s knowledge of the religious life grows. I’m sure God has something for you to learn at each stop. Keep in mind that the Holy Ghost works on attraction. Keep a list of things you like for each one. Whichever one has the longest list is probably the one you’re called to. Another sign is your heart expanding.

Blessings,
Cloisters

It is NEVER too early to visit a community! Even if you were in RCIA and couldn’t join yet, it would not be. I would strongly encourage that you use this time to build up a rapport with the community! You will find that if you do, you’ll come to know the community a heck of a lot better than just one or two visits and you’ll be better informed about your decision if you choose to apply. All I’m saying is if you can afford visits, GO FOR IT!!! 👍 I wish I could afford visits to the CFRs, so in a way, I kind of envy you! LOL!

*Defiantly “go for it” The process of entering takes time so yes start now. Visit and see where you are called. There are many things you can do while your debt is being paid down. Write them get to know them. Get to know vocations events in your diocese too. Get involved.
(I began my journey over 3 years ago even with debt you could never imagine… I searched all over the United States both active and Contemplative communities. Now my debt is gone and I am 5 short weeks from (re) entering.)

Blessings of Peace and All Good!*

Thank you CarmeliteGirl25 and Poor Clare tobe for the advice 🙂 I am now trying to find out the best way to get to the communities that I want to visit, so hopefully I will be able to make some arrangements within the next couple of months 😃

Poor Clare,

Have you told us (or are you willing to tell us) where you’re entering?

Remember to discuss this with your spritual director. Besides members on this forum, s/he is the one can probably give you really good advices if you have discussed with him/her about your discernment.

Poor Clare,

*Anode my pleasure to share.

I sometimes hesitate in threads to share (to) much as others have so many other things of more interest to share or ask.

I shall be entering the Poor Clares in Spokane, Washington. (July 16th this year)

( calledbyjoy.com/* )

I have been in discernment to re enter religious life ( I was professed in an active order but due to family events had to leave to take care of Mom)

I began my vocation search (to reenter) almost 3 years ago. For anyone thinking of entering a community. My answer is yes visit… don’t be afraid to dream, and pray pray pray!

Blessings and Thank You for asking!!!

👋 I was in debt over $20,000 dollars when I started to discern communities. It gave me motivation to pay off my loans quicker. As you are in the process of paying off your debt, use this time to talk to different orders/communities. By the time you are debt free, you may be ready to enter a community.

Thank You!!.. I have known them for many years (25 to be exact). They are a delightful group of religious and filled with joy. I had occasion to escort two of the sisters during our Catechetical Congress here in Los Angeles. I was amazed at how many people knew them through their book and e mail ministry. Again many thanks in for your kind words. Blessings!

Thank you all for your help and advice, I am hoping to visit 3 communities before the end of the year and I have also started looking for a job so that I can pay off my debt.

Hi Star Maiden

I’m another one who thinks you start your visiting now!!!

As well as giving you added motivation to clear your debts as soon as you can, starting now has the advantages of you being able to visit a number of communities including those that are that are not so well known.

I’d also suggest that you also keep a list of anything that you do not like/find difficult about the communities you visit. Then you can think about the reasons for this.

This could lead to thinking about whether some of what you do not like /find difficult would be a challenge you would like and help you grow. It’s good for us to stretch ourselves or be stretched but not until we break.

Your positive and negative reactions would also be good material for discussions with your spiritual director.

Best wishes in your visits. Please give us some progress reports.
