Should I watch Prometheus?

My brother keeps bothering me about wanting me to watch the Ridley Scott film

Prometheus. However, I have heard some very questionable things from it from sites

such decentfilms and since it is rated O by the usccb. I have watched O rated films

before, but I have seen little to none of these types of movies for the last five years, and I

am a little hesitant to start again. He also said that it was either this or Scarface, and he

knows that I am not the kind of guy who wants to watch a film like Scarface. Furthermore,

he gave me no option to back out, its either this or the other, no backing out. What

should I do? Thank you for any feedback.

He’s going to force you to watch one movie or the other? Not sure I understand the situation.

He definitely was a little forceful. He does get pretty forceful with me sometimes.

He’s 3 years older than me, so he is my older and only brother.

If it’s something you don’t want to do, don’t do it. Your conscience is telling you something important.

I find it a bit…unusual…that you’re in a position where he could “force” you to sit and watch an entire movie.

Parents involved here?

I used to love so many darker violent movies until my wife simply asked me: "Why do you put all of that junk in you head?"

I hope your in a position where you can stand up for yourself. Don’t understand why it is so important for your brother that you see something you don’t want to see? Maybe you can agree on something together that is more fun. I’ve seen Scarface (and it was very disturbing and not a very good movie at all).I wish I never saw a lot of these violent movies , as the images will always be with me.

I too have a one and only brother who is 3 years older. He too can be forceful. But he can’t really force you to do something you don’t want to, especially if it’s watching a movie.

Maybe you should look it up on IMDB and read the parental guide (aka. content advisory) and see if there is anything that you would not want to see.

I have been curious about this movie, and want to see it more out of the curiosity factor. I don’t expect to be harmed by it in any way.

I still don’t see how he could force you to watch a movie you don’t want to see?

If you absolutely MUST be in the room with him (are all the doors to the house locked?), take a book to read.

He likes Ridley Scott’s work? How about a compromise? Kingdom of Heaven was directed and produced by Ridley Scott. Gladiator was also. Both films are rated L/A-IV by the USCCB, and R by the MPAA. What draws me to them is the personal sacrifice and redemption of the main characters as they struggle to do what is right.

If he refuses to compromise, then you can tell him point-blank he’s just acting like a bully and a jerk, and you won’t put up with that.

If you don’t want to watch it, then don’t. As far as the content, I would surmise the rating from the USCCB is “O” (morally offensive) because of this: The Catholic News Service article says:*The film contains considerable grisly sci-fi violence, several instances of rough language, much crude and crass language, significant profanity, some sexual references and innuendo, nonexplicit relations between an unmarried man and woman, one use of marijuana, and some alcohol consumption. *Another good source from a Catholic perspective is from Steven Greydanus with Decent Films.

What many skeptics probably like about the film is that there are times when it suggests that ancient aliens created human life on earth and thus there is no God. Granted, they leave the question open as to whether or not there is a “God.” These ancient aliens are called the “Engineers.” At one point, the character representing Christianity says something like, “Who created the Engineers?” The question is never answered, but I’m glad they asked the obvious question through one of the characters. That character’s faith also basically amounts to “I believe this because I choose to.” In the mind of skeptics, faith is something that lacks evidence. You just believe whatever you choose to when it comes to religion, which is a belittled caricature of those who come to the faith by way of including reason and evidence.

At any rate, if you’re confident in your faith, the movie is not going to shake it. As far as entertaining goes, there are so many parallels to the first Alien movie, it’s just basically a remake with slightly different storyline.

My brother saw it, (we’re both big sci-fi fans) but was not impressed, regardless of the moral issues against the film, it is just not that good a movie (regardless of sci fi wizardry that make for good visuals), thin plot and poor character development kind of killed it for my brother.

Gladiator is a much better choice.

The thing is, my parents and my brother all have seen it with the exception of me, and my brother has been wanting me to see it, and my parents are both on his side. The other thing is that if I ended up getting a smartphone for Christmas, he would offer to pay for the monthly fee. As you can see, my brother loves me very much, and I do too. Because of this, I ought to watch the film with him in return. My mom also said that I shouldn’t be so guarded, if you know what I mean. So, its pretty much a one man battle on my part.

Here’s the deal. It’s not that I don’t want to hang out with him. Its just that my personal tastes have changed throughout the years and am unable to handle the certain things I used to overlook in movies; now I would blush, feel down, and uneasy inside. The reason that I began to feel this way is simply because I’ve gone through a lot of changes in my life. Some people left my life, some people changed for the worse and some new people came into my life and have had a profound influence on me, like Michael Voris (not personally). And a lot of these things that happened were and are beyond my control, both negative and positive. And a movie like Prometheus would make me feel uneasy while watching it not just because of its immoral and questionable content (though that is a good enough reason), but also because it would remind me of those sudden changes in life that I would rather not deal with. Another reason is simply because my tastes in certain things have changed.

Sure, I don’t have to engage in something that I would feel very uncomfortable and uneasy doing, but I also can’t let everything revolve around me. My parents have done things for me that they didn’t want to do but ended up doing, so why can’t I do the same with my brother? The other question is that if I do watch it, would I be compromising some of the content in this movie that does not promote the good of the people, but the opposite instead?

I apologize for the lengthy response.

By the way, I think I will convince him to watch Gladiator with me instead, and save Prometheus for another time, when I feel that I am ready to handle it.

I’m Catholic. I watched Prometheus and thought it was really good.
The only movie types we are forbidden to watch are pornographic ones.
All other movies may be watched although some may be recommended not to watch but not forbidden. People who are weak in faith should probably avoid movies like the Da Vinci Code.

Don’t watch it. The reviews say it all. It’s bad SF storytelling and contains immoral material.

Excellent. Please consider seeing Kingdom of Heaven also. It’s one of Ridley Scott’s best.

The reviews are wrong. I watched it. Its the prequel to the Alien series of movies which were great.
Prometheus is a prequel to Alien, with a big cliff-hanger ending, It’s the first of a hoped-for duo or trilogy, if this one sells enough tickets and he can get the next part funded. He probably will.

I remember seeing Alien in the theater when it was first released. Scared the kay-rap out of me, even standing on its own without a big cliff-hanger ending.

If the OP chooses to wait to watch Prometheus until the sequel is released and the cliff-hanger is resolved, he won’t be the first person to do so.
