A few weeks ago, I was at a Youth for Truthand Men of Valor conference, which was supposed to feature Jason Evert, but he couldn’t make it. Instead, another Catholic chastity apologist, Matthew Fraddcame all the way from the Land Down Under to speak. I bought a shirt that sponsored his ministry, theporneffect.com, and it says on the front: “Love Women, Fight Porn”. I’m also a college student, and my parents advised me not to wear this shirt on campus because I could very well be met with hostility (and I don’t doubt that). But I feel like I would be denying the truth if I do not wear it. I love women; they have had a huge impact on my life and have, surprisingly, made me manlier. What’s your call?

your parents love you and never want anything bad to happen to you. But life is a risk each day you wake up and walk out your door. I’d wear if but take a sweatshirt or sweater. If you feel physically threatened then you can cover it up.

This call is only yours to make. How much does it mean to you to make the statement? A few years ago I was selling car license frames for my parish that read,“Choose Life.” One person admitted that she wouldn’t put it on her car for fear that she would become a target for rabid abortion pushers. I never had any problems with my car being damaged. You could be a target, but you could be giving courage to the faint of heart. Good luck and God bless.

Well, I guess I could cover it up if I feel threatened, and the first reply said. Fresh snow is on the ground now, so I have to wear a coat. Some people might not even notice it in the first place. I must still be struggling with the teenage belief that everyone is going to notice me and me alone, when most people think the same thing and don’t notice others.

First of all, good for you for attending that conference and wanting to take a stand against pornography! Porn is a terrible poison in society.

I don’t think the current atmosphere concerning pornography garners the sort of passionate debate (and hostility) that is sometimes seen between pro-life and pro-abortion supporters. After all, we frequently hear the terms “pro-life activist” and “pro-choice activist” but I’ve never heard the term “pro-porn activist.” And I think it is safe to guess that many people who approve of porn are secretive about it and consequently would not publicly confront someone wearing a “Love Women, Fight Porn” t-shirt. I have seen at least one televised debate concerning pornography, but the person defending porn (whom I guess could be called a “pro-porn activist”) was actually in the porn industry.

With all this in mind, I don’t think wearing the t-shirt you mentioned will make you the target of outright hostility. A few people may want to debate you concerning the topic of censorship (because they interpret the idea of “fighting porn” to involve such), but to me it just seems unlikely that a person would be outright hostile over this (unless he happens to be a some kind of nut, waving a stick and screaming, “You’ll never take my porn!!!”).

You’re absolutely right. The only real threat would be that some may laugh or make crude statements, but Jesus covered that when He promised good to those who were persecuted for His sake. Go for it!

Wearing that shirt you will provoke some - particularly those who use porn and go to prostitutes (its really the same thing) - and you will attract the attention of a whole lot of good people, especially women - also many secular women are very tired of the porn-culture.
I think I speak for most women when I say we are so tired of seeing women reduced to a piece of naked flesh to be looked at, at billboards and everywhere.

I remember walking on a parking lot with my boyfriend some months ago and there were two big commecial posters at that parking lot trying to sell two different products. One poster carried a very scarcely clad woman who was bleeding and messy and erotic in a masochistic way, and then right next to it, on the other poster, was centred a smiling face on a handsome mature man dressed fully in a nice suit and looking like a stable and comfortable guy… My boyfriend looked at me and said to me… “Quite embarrassing… I am ashamed for my gender that many men find that interesting ( he pointed at the woman) while women find that interesting (he pointed at the nice man)”.

So wear the t-shirt… odds are you will get new friends…
I know if I ever saw a guy wearing a t-shirt like that I’d immediately go and shake his hand and I’d tell my friends: today I met a REAL man.

secular guys might sneer at you for trying to look like a hero, and would probably label you a hypocrite (“oh as if he’s never looked at porn”). Of course that’s just ignorant cowardice, and it even betrays the fact that most secular men see pornography as a “guilty pleasure.” Exactly what it is - unfortunately they deny the reality of that guilt for themselves.

Anyway, it’s a good message that should be seen. Don’t be afraid to wear it. An even better shirt would simply read: “Love people, fight porn”; to put the emphasis on love vs. lust - the real battle at stake - rather than men vs. women (a gross generalization).

Yes, there are some who might choose to debate with you about “freedom of expression” or some such. There are those who might think of you as a backward fellow. But perhaps in compensation, there are a LOT of young women who deeply resent pornography, and you’re likely to get some appreciative comments as well.

Very well, then. But it has to be admitted that unless one goes to an extraordinarily traditional school, one is very unlikely to run into a professor who is on the extreme right. Virtually all college professors are liberal to extremely leftist.

A Good Portion of Professors ARE Liberal, but Not the Whole Shebang. And a Good Proportion of them tend to Congragate in Certain Departments. Humanities is the Obvious One. Sociology and Psychology are Others.

I’m sorry, but I never met anybody from the Botany Department or Who Taught Accounting at the College (now University) I attended that was a Flaming Anarchist Leftist. Not then, not now. And I know many College Students from other States and Places who Don’t know of Those and other Departments being Overrun with Secular Leftists.
