Is it ok for me to take this job?

I am very much against working on Sunday. But I was just offered an opportunity to work nights. My shift will start @ 9p.m. on Sunday night, and I am wondering since our sabbath starts on Saturday evening, does it end Sunday evening. Would it be ok for to accept this offer?

yes

Hi,

Yes I think it is ok because the job starts so late on Sunday.

Even if your job started at 9 AM it would be all right for you to work on Sundays. As long as you attend either the Vigil or a Sunday Mass and keep the day holy as best as you are able to, you are fine. 🙂

Does anybody have anything from the church? I hate to just set an arbitrary standard.

I disagree. I don’t understand how Christians have decided that honor the sabbath does not matter anymore.

Um, the (Catholic) Sabbath doesn’t start on Saturday night- the vigil Mass would have traditionally been celebrated over midnight and into the next day.

As Catholics, we use the 24-hour day, not the Jewish Sundown-Sundown system.

So, 9p.m. on Sunday is still Sunday? 😛

From the CCC:
2185 On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body. Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest. The faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health.
One of our “family needs” is to feed, clothe and house our families. If one must work on a Sunday, it is a legitimate excuse. Work in the above quote means working at doing things not needed to be done as family needs or social services. Leisure activities are also all right as long as they don’t detract from the holiness of the day.

The Vigil Mass fulfills the Sunday obligation because liturgically the Church does go by sundown/sunrise time. Which is why the Vigil Mass, in the USA, may be celebrated beginning at 4 PM Saturday afternoon.

Didn’t know about this, thanks. But if the Sunday obligation is from Sunset to sunset, how does the 6:00 evening Sunday mass fulfill the Sunday obligation? And if at sunset, Sunday ends, then one may do work in the evenings?

Sundays, uniquely among the days of the week, go from 4pm Saturday to midnight Sunday for liturgical purposes.

In any event it is a mere 3 hours work out of the 32 hours that constitute the liturgical sabbath. I hardly think you’re at risk of not being able to appropriately honour the day in the remaining 29 hours 🤷

I’m not a priest, so I’m giving you my personal opinion. While people of the Jewish faith celebrate their sabbath ruled by sundown, Catholics tend to have gone by a midnight to midnight timetable. You’d have to ask your priest.

But I’ve been looking for work and have similar dilemma. The only thing right now would be nights - already a hardship since I’m not supposed to drive at night, so I might need to have someone drive me. But the other requirement is, I think, one Sunday every other week. For me, that’s out. I’m adamant about it my religion’s Sabbath - while everyone wants us to follow secular rules.
Trying to adhere.
