My younger sister was concieved via IVF. My mom’s insurance did not cover it as it is an elective procedure. It was very expensive, but I wouldn’t give up my sister for any price. While I can’t personally decide if I think IVF is OK or not, I don’t want it to not be available as an option for couples who want to choose it. That being said doctors like the guy who got the Octomom pregnant should not be in practice, and there are a lot of ethical pitfalls involving IVF.
My mom’s doctor was extremely ethical about how he handled the situation, no more that two embryos were ever implanted, and no extra ones were made as “backup”. When my mom miscarried the first baby, they started over again from scratch. By the way my family is protestant, so the Catholic Church’s stand point on IVF was not part of the decision.
I think private insurance companies should be able to cover elective procedures (IVF, cosmetic surgery) if they want or not cover them if they don’t. Plans that cover elective stuff should probably cost more too, and as the consumer you can decide what type of plan you want. As for the couple in Canada, IVF and other elective procedures are extremely expensive, and often are not OK with several religons, things like that should have to be paid for with either private insurance or your own personal funds, not taxpayer money. Just my opinion.
