I don’t use it, just for everyone’s information.

However, I do not believe it should be considered a sin unless it is taking over someone’s life and making them lethargic and lazy and unproductive. It can help people sort through their problems because it makes one see the world in a different way. It can make someone more appreciative of good food, colors, friendship, and God’s other creation. One can feel closer to God because of the feelings of euphoria it produces. It is excellent for examining how small we are in the grand scheme of things. If anything, Catholics should support it.

Any thoughts?

those are physical and psychological effects, not genuine spritual experiences.
if it is illegal it is also sinful

if you are in this country and use drugs recreationally you are directly supporting the violence in Mexico that is spilling over here on the border and should also claim a share in that guilt. IMO
that is an “editorial you” btw

Like I said, I don’t use it.

I do give some support to those activists to make it legal, because I believe that will help end the violence.

I don’t think drugs per se–including alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine–are regarded as sinful in Catholicism. As you intimated, it’s the possible sinful behaviors resulting from using them too often which make them potential means of sin. Indeed, medical marijuana, for example, can be beneficial in alleviating pain, while prescription medication, if abused, can be harmful. The use of illegal drugs in itself is criminal, whether or not it is sinful.

i have to disagree about the closer to God part cause after i became Christian again and i smoked i felt farther away from God

I think it would only be a sin if you were in a state or country where it’s against the law. I don’t think it’s a sin to drink alcohol as long as you’re over the legal drinking age.

Just because something is legal does not mean it isn’t sinful.

Abortion is legal but it is gravely sinful.

this is just a little off topic but i feel the need to warn people about the K2 style marijuana substitutes. They can be dangerous and i speak from personal experience…i tried it one time and was 30 minutes later in a local ER with difficulty breathing and a dangerously high heart rate. I am grateful that i am ok but i felt called to warn people about this Legal alternative.

Oh ya.

I guess it would depend on the Church’s position on it, too. If it isn’t condemned by the Church and it’s legal, then it shouldn’t be a sin.

Thanks for the correction. 👍

And just because it is illegal doesn’t mean it is sinful. Perhaps it depends upon the intentions. If one has cancer and it obtaining it for physical pain relief, and it is not approved in their state, they are not using it for sinful means.

Alcohol is legal but it can be used for sinful means and can also become an addiction.

As it is marijuana is illegal and it would be a sin to use it because we are obligated to obey civil laws that do not go against God or force us to sin. I don’t know everything about Marijuana but if it was made legal, I suppose it should be treated like alcohol where there is a potential for sin when you abuse it and have too much and that would be the sin of intemperance. 2cents.

it would certainly end the violence though, think about all the violence and organized crime that arose because of prohibition, if it is legalized hopefully it puts the drug dealers out of business.

What I don’t understand though is the general tolerance of cigarettes (morally) and the intolerance of marijuana (I have used neither) like as far as I know, cigarettes have nothing redeeming health wise at all, but rather have chemicals in them designed to get you addicted to them. Whereas with marijuana it has many medicinal and therapeutic purposes as well for people suffering from eating disorders such as anorexia where marijuana increases the appetite for such people, it’s also used by people undergoing cancer treatment and so on, and also used as a stress reliever which many people use alcohol for without getting drunk.

I certainly believe intoxicating yourself to a level of abandoning your free will is morally unacceptable, but I don’t think that in principle there is anything wrong with consuming things for morally licit state of mind. Like I don’t believe taking a cup of coffee in the morning to get you awake and alert is a sin, or drinking a glass of wine in order to relax, or taking an energy drink to be able to stay awake to study. 🤷

Gee,what an endorsement from someone who is just visiting here and chatting.Come now.this poison has been around for centuries and ruins the brain cells, has caused more accidents ,driving while stoned does that young fellow and even tho you sound like the outdated hippy endorsement of this loco weed,it does not make the world a better place…that was the lie that did John Lennon in,he promised such paradise to his gullible followers and one of them killed him …strawberry fields forever sure! This junk was first called weed, then grass, then joint…finally our rulers settled on ‘pot’ for that conjures to the mind that its harmless and even good for ya,as in mommys pot on the stove.

Marijuana does NOT kill brain cells. Misinformation. It is NOT an intoxicant eiher because unlike alcohol, it is NOT a toxic substance. Vaporized, marijuana is probably the safest “drug” you can consume.

This is true, this can happen. Two friends of mine who are both excessive marijuana users told me that this can happen (and did to their friends) and they would know above all people.

That is rubbish. Refer us to a credible research study which backs up your claim.

However, marijuana contains carcinogens, which makes it unsafe with long-term usage.

Marijuana, like sex, is far over rated. If it does not lead to increased religious spirituality it’s a waste of time and energy.

Using a proscribed drug for medical purposes which has been prescribed by a doctor is okay and is not a sin.
Obtaining it illegally, without a doctor’s prescription is a sin.

Marijuana does not contain carcinogens. If it contained carcinogens then it would absolutely never be used to treat cancer patients.

As for whether or not it is a sin, that depends on the circumstances. I used to use it but I don’t anymore. The main reason that I don’t is because of the sinful lifestyle that goes along with marijuana users. Several users that I’ve encountered are atheists, have premarital sex, and do other things that simply aren’t good influences for a Catholic teen. Also, I try to honor my mother and father and smoking marijuana would definitely go against their wills.

So I guess what I’m trying to say is that I don’t feel that smoking marijuana is a sin, but most of the things that go along with it are sinful.
