Should mass be celebrated outside a church?

I am going to be in a senior in a catholic school and we are going to disney world for our senior trip. On sunday they have mass in a conference room in the hotel and the priest wears a disney hat. And for some reason i seem to have a problem with it. I was always taught that mass had to be said in a Church. My mom told me that “wheres theres people there is a chuch” (which i think is very protestant) And liturgical abuses like the disney hat is what made me switch to the latin mass(which has greatly strengthen my faith because of the beautiful reverence) So i was wondering what everyone else thought? Do you think it is in bad taste to celebrate mass in the hotel? or am i just over reacting

There’s nothing inherently wrong with Mass being celebrated in a conference room or other such facility on these kinds of occasions. The Disney hat is going too far, though.

The pope just celebrated mass outside for World YOuth Day.

At the National Catholic Youth conference, priests and bishops celebrate mass inside huge auditoriums and stadiums.

CERTAIN OTHER MATTERS CONCERNING THE EUCHARIST

1. The Place for the Celebration of Holy Mass
   [108.] “The celebration of the Eucharist is to be carried out in a sacred place, unless in a particular case necessity requires otherwise. In this case the celebration must be in a decent place”.197 The diocesan Bishop shall be the judge for his diocese concerning this necessity, on a case-by-case basis.

[109.] It is never lawful for a Priest to celebrate in a temple or sacred place of any non-Christian religion.

If it’s a matter of being unable to get your entire class to a Catholic church to have Mass, than it would appear that it would be acceptable to have Mass in the Hotel. Sometimes at conferences for Catholic events they will hold Mass in a conference hall because everything is happening at that hotel. It’s pretty normal and the conferences I’ve been at have been pretty reverent.

The Disney hat is not appropriate. I highly doubt that you would be able to find a “Disney Hat” under the list of vestments for Mass. For the Latin Mass, the biretta is used to some extent (I don’t fully understand) but I would guess that wearing an obnoxious Disney hat would be the same as wearing a baseball cap for Mass–not acceptable.

Praise the Lord that you are thinking about these things as a senior in high school! That is wonderful! For the disney hat situation, if you feel comfortable, I would speak with the priest privately and just ask that he not use it. Being that you are in high school and he might just flat out say no, you might need to get other students and maybe some adults to back you up. Bottom line, I would do everything I can to make sure he doesn’t celebrate Mass in a goofy hat. I’m guessing the hat is just in good fun and the priest isn’t being malicious but that does not excuse the hat…You’re a senior so if he thinks you are nuts or a party pooper, who cares. As long as it’s for the Lord, it’s okay to be a little nuts.

Considering the logistics of trying to get your group to the nearest Catholic Church to Disney, saying mass in the conference room is the best option.

I don’t understand how you can predict that at some point this coming year the priest will wear “a disney hat” at a future Mass that you allege is going to be held in a conference room. That’s an awfully specific crystal ball you’ve got there. “Over-reacting”? Try over-pre-acting.

Although I never expected to find a Mass in a casino, I’ve seen two bishops concelebrate in one.

Ok, actually it was in the conference center .

It was the catholic school con fence,and the 10 year anniversary of the diocese, so the first bishop came back.

As for the location, the casinos have the conference centers here, and the family that used to control Stations are long-time backers of Catholic education here, and gave the diocese sweetheart deals.

Need and pastoral concern make for intestine liturgical settings.

The is (or at least was) a Russian Orthodox group holding Divine Liturgy in a room in the basement of the parish center of the Reno Cathedral.

There used to be a church at Lake Tahoe whose side walls opened up to additional outdoor seating to accommodate the summer crowds.

And my daughter had the only licit outdoor Catholic wedding of which I’ve ever heard.

For reasons on which I’m unclear and from before I came to the parish, we have a second consecrated altar, dedicated to the Theotokos, in one of our outdoor patios.

The expected crowd was larger an the church could handle, so we set up out there, not only using our portable icons, but hanging a temporary iconostasis made from fabric.

It worked so well we now doe this each year for Pascha (but we’ve dropped the hanging fabric iconostasis) .
