fix:
Like when men start wearing female adornments? How many make it immoral? One, two, 57? How about a nose ring? What about a nose ring with a chain to the earring?

When does it become immoral?
i don’t know. it’s not for me to judge whether or when others are sinning.

i can tell you that whetever sin there may be is in the heart, and not in a hole in the ear lobe or nose or tongue or wherever else.

fix:
It seems there is no sense of alarm, when should we become alarmed?
about earrings? i would say never. it’s just not alarming.

reminds me of chicken little: “the sky is falling! the sky is falling!”

Actually, it is important to discern correctly. Do you raise children? If they want to have 4 holes in one ear and a nose ring, would it be licit? If they see another like that, do you say it is ok for them, but not you? Why is it ok or not ok? BTW, we are not speaking of cuplability on the part on any particular person, we are speaking of the general notion of sin and propriety. There is nothing wrong with determining if something is sinful or not.

Self mutiliation is a sin. The question is when does it turn to mutiliation?

It all starts somewhere. Take a look at this:

yes. and yes.

well, making certain assumptions about age and maturity (16 and well-balanced and level-headed), then sure. why not?

my 16 year old son getting four earrings and a nose ring isn’t like him asking to have sex with his girlfriend.

well, i would have a conversation with him about it. and then let him make up his own mind. because i don’t see anything wrong with it.

true enough. but i admit that it’s possible to act sinfully in getting an earring, just like it’s possible to receive the blessed sacrament sinfully. or to give money to the poor sinfully. and so on.

my only point is that it’s not necessarily sinful.

fair enough. and the answer is “not at the point of getting earrings”.

what’s “it”?

yeah - that’s the ticket: the world is going down the tubes because women wear pants and men wear earrings. it’s all so clear to me now.

sigh.

Not the sole reason, but one piece in the puzzle. I reject the notion that every fad, like male earrings, is harmless, or putting a ring through one’s nose is harmless, or that every fad is nonconsequential, or that these trends do not reflect a futher devaluing of our dignity and respect for ourselves and for each other.

Take a look at the trend in fasions the past few decades. Tell me they are tending toward good. These things in isolation may be viewed as no big deal, but taken together they do form a picture of where we are going.

i agree - not every fad is harmless.

i also agree that society’s moral fabric is unravelling with increasing speed. but i don’t think that immodest fashion is the cause, but rather just another symptom of it.

It’s weird how that got popular about the same time women started getting tatoos & smoking cigars. What, me worry? 😃

Funy how God ordered for some mens ears to be pierced. When a slave didn’t wish to be set free in the jubilee year his master would pierce his ear at the door to the home and he would be his slave forever. Men wearing earings in my mind is no more evil than women or girls wearing jeans. No more evil than pink polo shirts, no more evil than women with shorter hair. Freedom of expression, as long as its not tied to some immoral act like being part of a cult.

sorry I didn’t vote, I read the headline too hastily and thought you asked “should men have their ears pinned back?”
Oh boy, don’t mention that to my wife, she might want me to get my ears pinned back so I can hear her better. 😃

I was reading some of the Book of Genesis earlier this week.

Isaac, son of Abraham, sent a servant of Abraham to find a wife for Isaac, among the people of Abraham. The servant found a young lady, Rebekah.

The servant had purchased two gold bracelets - and a nose ring - for Rebekah, which she wore for Isaac.

Now, I’m not advocating that women go out and wear nose rings for their bethrothed, but, hey, it’s in Scripture.

By all means its OK (in my opinion). Would I date a man who wore earrings? It would depend on his style. If he wore a motorcycle jacket, nasty jeans, etc., then no I wouldn’t date him. If he wore an Armani suit to work and wore earrings, yes, I would date him in a heartbeat (he would have to be good looking too though). 😉

Absolutely nothing wrong with it. Actually I plan on having both my ears pierced this week!

Oooh! Where can I find one of those? :bounce:

Anyway, I think women can wear pants and guys can wear earings. The breaking point is if guys wear dangley, girlie earings and women start trying to look like men. But, with all things in moderation, I’ve got no issue with guy’s earings or women’s pants.

I really don’t care all that much if a guy wears earrings or puts one of those shiny ball things on his tounge or puts rings in his nose or lips. I always thought Frankinstine looked pretty cool with that bolt through his neck! Of course I still think long hair and a beard while wearing bellbottoms and love beads is way groovy too Mike
