Should my family give to the Salvation Army?

When it comes to charities, some in my family make no distinction between Catholic charities and “Christian” charities. Specifically, how can I convince them to support St. Vincent De Paul instead of the Salvation Army? I keep reminding my family that the Salvation Army is not just a charitable organization but a Protestant denomination.

And that’s the point you should emphasize. A Catholic’s responsibility is to support the Church
– the Catholic Church – not a Protestant sect. The Salvation Army does worthwhile work, and if it were the only group doing that particular work it might be okay to support the charitable endeavors (but not the church). However, since the St. Vincent De Paul Society does the same work as the Salvation Army, and, for that matter, since there are also worthwhile secular organizations that do similar work to the Salvation Army, there is no reason for a Catholic to financially support a Protestant sect.
