Well, all of us ignorant, irrational, uneducated Catholics will just stay here, content in our blithering idiocy - okay.

You might want to do some study, and learn that if it were not for the Catholic Church, the university system that “educated” you would not exist.

May God rescue from your arrogance.
No I did not say you were ignorant irrational and uneducated, I just said that the reason I turned my back on Catholism was for those reasons. I know intelligent rational educated people that are one releigon or another, I went to/go to school and university with them.

And yes I know the university system was dependant on the church, but the church did more harm than good there. Also without Islam alot of great writing would have been lost to the church.

God can’t rescue me if he doesn’t exist as you know him…

And yes I am arogant, I hope I do not cross over to hubris…

Abbadon:No I was absolutely serious. I questioned everything I beleived in from a young age.

Well so did I, as well as I expect most people on this forum did.

And it was through my education that i learned about how the world really work.

Yeah me too… However… I have always questioned the basis on which a teacher taught and asked behind to find the paradigms of these times and others. I don’t believe in the theory of evolution, nor am I an enlightenment optimist who thinks folkes get wiser and wiser as the centuries go by… Just because we got something called technology does not mean we have suddenly become masters of the universe and explained the hows and whys. Many of the greatests scientists in history were men of faith. Today its fashinable to be atheist. In my four years at the university I have found that stance among some professors too. They say they are too smart. I say they are too afraid to stand out. They like to feel on top of the world (how that goes with their belief that they have once been monkeys I have not quite figured out as of yet) …
I have even studied the field that statistically holds most atheists of all fields: religious psychology. Interesting for certain… it was very hard core science (cognitive and neuro psychology)… or tried to be… but in the end it was all a bearded man with a dr. degree who was making fun of religious people and who was selectively chosing to give us texts that were highly in favour of the atheistic theory… I have heard every explanation for religion and religious experience under the sun today in religious science except for the one that takes religious experience on its word… and I am still a believer.
Nothing that I have ever encountered or seen made me change my mind… even the things that were designed to make me loose faith. I have heard all kinds of ridicule… and yours is also ridicule… but because you are politically correct in your arrogant statement you fail to see that you are patronizing the people on these fora by your remark.

And then i naturally figured out how silly many things were.

Me too…many more things than you can imagine (eg. I live in a culture where drunkeness, casual sex and porn is seen as the highest forms of entertainment… excuse me if I dont find our generations moving forward in wisdom)
At university I have found the most science-critical texts most illuminating. I mean… those dealing with self-scrutiny and self-criticism in the fields that claim the science-label on false grounds.

All the paradoxes, other world releligions and after many years came to the current state I am at now. If i was illogical, unintelligent and uneducated I doubt i would have come at the same conclusion.

**And your own religion?
I am not saying you are uneducated in the worldly sense of the word. I doubt, however, that you have had solid Christian teaching but please tell me otherwise if I am wrong. Many of us havent been educated in the things of God and objective truth and logic either while we were growing up. We have been left to our own limited minds and the manipulation of our culture.
Most of us here have come to the conclusion that God exists through ‘a light from above’… a intervening power that we had nothing or little to do with. Even if I had a thousand years to practice I could not have been able to produce one moment of my own existense nor nor one moment of believing. I know quite a few former non-believers besides myself. All educated people.

Ps… I dont know if you too have studied religious science. My professors shunned from this and similar questions but may I challenge you to explain to me what is going on in Medjugorje in Bosnia. better yet… what exactly happend in 1917 in Fatima in Portugal ? Mass hallucination of 70,000 people?

Shalom :)**

II find it intresting that I hear this common response, don’t do this don’t do that or you may go to hell. Then just say only the lord can judge. Well if the Lord is a fair judge I doubt he would send anyone to eternal damnation even child rapists and murders don’t deserve that…

Hell is absence of God. You have not tried to be without Him. He upholds you every moment even if you deny Him. And you are right… we dont judge people… not even you. We say that Jesus is the only Door to eternal life. However, we dont presume to know what grace He has given you or others to recognize Him. He may not have given you grace to know Him just yet… it may only happen the day you die. Or it may have happend and inside you know that you have been proud and obstinate and chosen your own way instead of that of the God who created you and gave you life.
You know it better than we, but God is the only one who knows the depth of your heart to the core.

As for Odin and Thor and Freya and Baldar and all the other norse gods as well as those of any other pantheon you may chose to highlight so as to give us a taste of your great knowlege about mythologies … maybe you should save them for another audience.,

Ps. Jesus said: “Its not you who have chosen me, but I who have chosen you…”

For someone so amazingly intelligent and educated, you sure do have a lot of problems with the spelling of simple words.

Before I respond to other things, I know of the event you describe in 1917. How about you explain to me how 70 000 people saw the sun move yet no one else on earth did? Now lets think of other possibilities other than the sun actually moving. As you said mass hallucination, but bought on by what? Psychological event like that found in hyponosis theater?

Though the honest answer is I don’t know, I’ll put out possible explanations, if evidence can be found for one of these, even if it is the one where the sun actually moved and only 70,000 people saw it. I will totaly accept it.

But applying Occams Razor it is highly unlikely that the sun actually moved and only 70,000 people saw it. The most likely explanation is mass hallucination but brought on by what?

Yea english is my worst subject, and even if i see it underlined in red i type to fast to be bothered with backspacing or using hte mouse later on to spell check it, most of the time, if it is hideously unintelligible then i do…

Man spelling is hardly a big deal considering spellcheck exists…

The point wasn’t to point out my great knowledge of other mythologies than your own. The point was saying that these beliefs are equally unfounded and equally valid. And I actually do really like the goddess Hel, always had a thing for her since primary school, wheather she exists or not I really like the charachter of who she is…

There are other relegions than your own, many many relegions, and they all think your relegion is a mythology just like you think theres is.

Well care to disprove it an win a Nobel? Science isn’t about faith, you don’t choose to beleive or not to beleive, if you beleive something is wrong you have prove it wrong and support your own alternative theroy. Genetics, anthropology and palentololgy not to meantion cell biology and biology in general support evolution. It’s why we can do tests on rats before working up to human clinical testing.

i thinks its a waste of money and time, just go down to the leagle offices and get a piece of paper signed and use the money saved to start an enjoyable life for your self.
.
Even if your not Religious, some people just like to host a good party and have a nice evening with lots of friends and family!

Also, a lot of people who aren’t religious, really like to do something that is memorable or really fun when they are getting married.

Walkin’ down to city hall during lunch hour and getting hitched…sounds kind of depressing to me, certainly not much of a celebration of the new bond. 😦

I’d just rather spend the money saved on an extravagant wedding on a holiday somewhere we both enjoy.

Like I said despite saying all this, I will probably have a korean wedding ceremony, i think although she says she doesn’t want one but people like to feel special anyway, and i really do like her… Damnit…

Before I continue to read your response I would like to mention that I am progressing to helping others. I have moved from a Design Degree at RMIT to a Science Degree in Melbourne University into a Medical Degree at Melbourne University.

With my lifes purpose and goal being to further and better humanity.

So I am helping others in the best way I know how, with my intellect.
Your poor grammar and lack of punctuation, seriously has me questioning whether or not you are in fact as highly educated as you are letting on!

I could care less about a persons grammar in a forum. However, when the poster states that they are working on their 3rd degree…it most certainly becomes relevant.

N’est pas?

It does you no good if it exists but you do not use it.
Please use it on your posts before posting. Also, “I” is always capitalized. Basic English, my pal.🙂

(not to ridicule you, or anything, but poor spelling does reflect poorly on your education).

All this stuff about higher education, but you think that a 9th grade Catholic education is sufficient to teach the faith? Geez, most Catholic schools dont’ even teach the faith at all, and its really not likely to learn the deeper truthes of the faith by 9th grade. One isn’t even really at a point to be understanding lifetime committments then.

Try getting a college degree on the faith, from reputable teachers, and then your points will be taken more seriously.

Not to mention proper use of punctuation, basic sentence structure, correct spelling and English grammar.👍

( This only applies to those who claim that they are highly educated, tell us how many degree’s they have earned and present themselves as being intellectuals…when it is obvious, that they are not. )

Pft… Whenever I publish anything serious that matters i get my editor (cough freind with good english skills cough) to look over it. If its just raw communication i type fast and just as i think. ANd i don’t ever think in proper grammer. Plus english is my second and least favourite language…

Why would i want a college degree on faith? That would be so useless, and faith is as hitchens says the surrendering of the mind, it is the letting go of rationality and reason.

And by faith you mean the muslim faith yes?

I really don’t do anything to do with specialising in english, i could care less, most of the time i’m speaking with non native english speaking people in basic english and i cut out most of my words.

When I publish anything I always have my freind who is in journalism to look over my work, because my grammer and spelling is atrocious…

I don’t understand what spelling well and good grammer has to do with science, understanding, reasoning, math, surgery, design… which is what I’m doing. As long as i can communicate reasonably it’s not a problem…

I really don’t get why you value english and proper grammer on an internet forum… A book, a journal, a paper I completely understand and i make an effort… But this is just an internet forum…

Like you said this is just an internet forum, and like i said i barely use grammer in any of my degrees, i didn’t even write a single essay for 4 years…
