Hi~ I have a 16-year old daughter who is very intellectual and into “science” and psychology. She has stated in conversation that she considers herself agnostic, since one cannot “prove” God exists. Of course I say “just look around you” in so many words, that the intricacies of creation itself is a proof of an Intelligent Designer. She’s not buying it. Anyway, as much as she would love it if I told her she didn’t have to attend Mass anymore, my husband and I think she should come with us (and our other two children, 14 and 12). She hasn’t put up too much of a fight, although I don’t see her participating as far as saying the creed, etc. and she still receives Communion (I don’t even think she’s thinking about it). My concern though, is if she should be taking it at all. If we suggest she shouldn’t I can bet she’ll ask why she has to attend at all then. We just don’t want her to negatively affect her younger siblings. What are your thoughts? When should children be given the option of making their own decision?
