A lot of people are saying Pope Benedict should resign! What are your opinions on this? I’ve just read a story about German people having little faith left in this Pope.

Do you think Pope Benedict would resign?

Some people seem to be confusing the Catholic Church as some sort of democracy. It’s not. Its a monarchy.

Could he resign? Sure.

Should he? Why? Because people in the world, who know very little about the Church, say he should???

No. What would it accomplish???

People believe this Pope was involved in cover ups. I don’t know whether they are true or not. Most seem to think they are. That’s what I’ve read on the blogs.

Can we, the Church, move on from these sex scandals with the current Pope in the Vatican?

Absolutely not. The Catholic Church has survived scandals in the past and doubtlessly will survive scandals in future. Pope Benedict XVI is just the sort of man we need right now ( i.m.h.o.) to help remind us that the Church “will stand against the gates of Hell and Hell shall not prevail over her”, as she is doing now and has done for centuries.

First, don’t believe any blogs.

I only tend to give credence to what the Pope and the Vatican say.

Here is the letter the Holy Father sent:

The Vatican has denied that the Pope failed to act on sex abuse claims.
news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8588294.stm

The Pope has yet to comment on his handling of a child sex abuse case involving a German priest, which developed while Benedict was overseeing the Munich archdiocese.

I think that this is very important. The Pope should come out and deny any wrongdoing. Or he should step down.

This is all media hype. The media hates the Catholic Church and is out to destroy Her.

I am not sure when the abuse in Germany happened, but I read some place, I believe, it was 20 to 30 years ago. If so society in general treated abuse very differently than it does today.

I know from personal experience that when a complaint of child abuse on a 3 1/2 year old was committed 25 years ago, the police did nothing. Just said to go home and forget it. The child was so angry at that age that she wanted her daddy to take his gun and kill the man.

That was the mindset of doctors, police and society when most of these cases were suppose to have occurred.

The media is looking for anything from past files going back over 50 years to indict any Catholic priest and now they have turned on the Holy Father.

They will never destroy the Church, nor will Pope Benedict resign. He is a very strong Pope and that is one reason the media wants him out of the way. He speaks out very strongly on issues and they are trying to put a stop to this.

Why aren’t they looking into Protestant churches where it happens all the time, or going after school districts or any organization where there are children who are abused all the time. They just arrested a doctor who is accused of molesting 250 children. I am sure that case will not be of heard of after the first printing.

The media can make sure Obama was elected, but have no control over the office of the Head of the Catholic Church. Thank God!

I am very angry as if it happened to my family and nothing was done, why the big deal now. Can I go and sue the Police Department for covering up the abuse? Of course not.

Yours in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary

Let’s hope there aren’t any scandals in the future.

I would certainly think not. Though the sex scandals are terrible horrid things its not something he himself did. I think he is handling it with care as he must due to many misconceptions about the Catholic Church.

God Bless

Pray for me; often when I cry to heaven for help it is when I feel most abandoned. But when I turn to God and his saints and thank them notwithstanding. I believe they want to see how far I shall trust them. But the words of Job have not entered my heart in vain: “Even if God should kill me, I would still trust him” (Job13:15)

When one major newspaper…just ONE…has the courage to quit calling this a scandal caused “by paedophile priests” & call it what it is…a scandal or pederasty, of gay priests seducing pubescent & post-pubescent boys, I might take them seriously. Until then, I label them cowardly & totally ineffective.

Of course, the Pope shouldn’t resign. Why would you think that running is the answer? Pope Benedict has already given us the way of the future in his

If it gets to a point where the majority of Catholics, or the majority of Catholic leadership, no longer feels he is trustworthy than I think there would be no choice. The ability to lead simply won’t be there, and I don’t think that is an acceptable scenario. I’d like to think he’d resign for the good of the church if he felt things had reached that point.

If an investigation reveals that the charges are true, he should resign.

Every person complicit is allowing these pedophile priests to be moved quietly from post to post committing more and more atrocities should resign.

They really should be properly punished but resignation is a start.

Why should he resign? Because the New York Times is on his case? Surely you jest! :rotfl:

If he has been involved in a cover-up of these horrific crimes or has acted to protect those that have committed them or has even not taken action that could have stopped these atrocities from happening, then yes.

I don’t care about the NY Times. Whether they have an agenda or not is immaterial. Whether claims are true or not isn’t.

I don’t care about the social norms 20 years ago. We can’t claim that the Church is above moral relativism and holds to objective truths when it helps and then use social norms as an excuse when convenient.

If he is guilty of these things than he has shown that he has a problem with leadership and making command decisions. Yes, I believe that he will be protected from error in teaching and speaking ex cathedra, but that is not the sole function of the Pope.

The sadness that we all feel for the victims of these crimes is almost overwhelming. When you add the possibly millions of people who are less inclined to find salvation through the Church, it’s heartbreaking.
