Should Robert Mugabe be excommunicated?

Robert Mugabe, the tyrannical President of Zimbabwe, is a Roman Catholic. By all accounts he has presided over a shocking degradation of his nation, and his government has brought great suffering to many whilst a few cronies have received extraordinary benefits.

His lack of social justice brings public disgrace to Catholicism.

Is there a sufficient case for him to be excommunicated from the Church?

Is he actively Catholic? I mean, attend Mass, receive the sacraments, &c? This is the 1st I’ve ever heard of him being Catholic.
If not, there would really be no point to it.

If he is, then it is up to his local ordinary, no? From what I understand the purpose (or one of them) of excommunication is to shock the sinner into seeing his error and reforming. That hardly seems likely.

Mugabe a Catholic? Really? From what I know and understand he should be arrested and tried for many crimes, but will leave the fate of his soul to the discretion of those in authority to do so.

I think Catholic politicians that support abortion on demand should be denied the Sacraments until they either leave public office so they are not responsible for policy or change their public voting opinion or drop the label of Catholic by dropping the faith they are not upholding. Mugabe is a much more neferious individual than Kerry, Pelosi, Kennedy or Richardson so I doubt he would do well if I was to decide.

Is being a sinner – even a notorious public sinner – an excommunicable offense? Or do you have a specific excommunicable offense (eg something laid out in Canon Law) in mind?

He had mistress for 4 years before his first wife’s death whom he did eventually marry.

He is probably about ready to retire and as he didn’t win the last “election”.

A question. Are acts of harassment, assault, or worse on Catholic priests and bishops, excommunicable offences under Canon Law?

If they are, then I should think Mugabe has a case against him. Even if he did not personally carry out these actions, the ‘culture’ of intimidation he encourages against those who point to his wrongdoings in an effort to change his behaviour makes him ultimately responsible.
