Should Susan Atkins Be Released From Prison?

Susan Atkins was the Manson family member who killed Sharon Taite. Sharon was brutally stabbed while pregnant and then she wrote pig on the walls of Roman Polanski’s home. Among those who were also murdered were Steven Parent, Jay Sebring, Wojciech and Abigal Folger.

She was with Linda Kasabian and Patricia Krenwinkle on that night. She was originall sentenced to death but that sentence was communted to life in prison.

She is now dying of brain cancer, has had her left leg amuptated, and has her entire right side paralyzed. Her husband is leading the effort to have her released. Her parole was denied.

Personally, I do not believe she should be released. She committed a horrible crime that can not be forgiven.

Do you think she should be released?
 
No, and it has nothing to do with forgiveness. See, we can, and must, forgive others. Like it says in the Lord’s prayer, “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” But forgiveness dosn’t mean that all should go unpunished. She is being punished for what she has done. But for our own good, and possibly hers, we should forgive her as God demands us to do.
 
Has she confessed her wrong-doing to society and repented of it? That should be a first consideration before letting anyone out of prison before his/her time is up.

She is lucky, for didn’t she originally get the death penalty?

You are wrong, she can be forgiven, if she seeks it.

The courts decided her fate, she was given mercy to live.

Any other considerations for her would have to deal the issue of her ability to humble herself and not only confess but be remorseful of her crime.

My prayers go out for her…for me it doesn’t matter one way or the other if she dies in prison or out, but that she dies with her heart turned toward God and this we will never know in our life time…

She’s shown a lot of remorse. Her book “Child of Satan, Child of God” and her prison ministry are her attempt to make up for what she did using the only asset she has to offer – her voice. She weeps in parole hearings and expresses her sorrow to victims’ families year after year.
As a woman who has had an abortion, I can tell you it is possible to realize the reality of a death and one’s responsibility for it and be changed inside, and turn that sorrow to a desire to do something to preserve life.
She should get out on parole. It’s been two generations. She wants to see the outside one more time before leaving this world. She’s apparently very sorry and very changed since then.
 
A follower of Charles Manson chances of getting out of jail are zero to none. I don’t care what her circumstances are or how much remorse she has shown, the public would not stand for it.

If that is true, then I would agree–she should get compassionate release.

She should be released, if and when one can reverse time and resurrect her victims.

Until then, she is lucky to not have been executed and should remain in prison.

She may be repentant, but there are still the temporal consequences she has to make payment on. Being ill and sorry shouldn’t cut her prison sentence especially when such consideration was not granted to Manson’s victims.
 
No, How fortunate for her if indeed she has come to repent,perhaps she is more ready to come into the presence of the Lord than most of “us”.I pray for souls like hers,but her victim did not have the same option.How fortunate we live in a society that gives
transgressors a chance to live and repent I’ll pray she is "embracing"her cross,and grateful for the opportunity to do so,and of course I pray for the souls that were taken that day.I know my soul is "not"ready,
and if someone decides to “off” me,I have a much longer time
in the "expiation "zone than perhaps Susan,if I can even presume
upon purgatory.(of which I’m certain!) The Lord works in mysterious
ways,and his mercy endures for ever !

There’s the rub.
In our media-driven culture it wouldn’t matter if she were the most deserving inmate in California – she’s one of the Manson “family” and there’s no way she is going to get out.
I have to admit my knee-jerk reaction to the question was “of course she shouldn’t be released” but I’d bet that other inmates as bad or worse (but less famous) have been released in similar circumstances.
 
Having known Ms Atkins for a short while years ago, I can say that she probably has, to the best of her ability, repented and is comfortable in her role as spiritual adviser in the prison setting.

Despite the horrific nature of her crimes, she has achieved a certain status associated with her long term incarceration. She has gone through a series of metamorphosis, finding comfort in Eastern religions as well as Christianity and the devil worship of early days. Her manipulative nature didn’t fare well with the prison population, and eventually she had to reckon with the prospect of spending her life in prison.

As to the question should she be released prior to death, I am ambivalent. She does not present a danger to others, especially in her present medical state. She has enjoyed life (yes, even in prison) whereas Tate, Tate’s child, Folger, Frykowski, Sebring, and Hinson, were denied the opportunity. The true viciouness of the crimes defies description.

She has done well, become educated and spiritually active. She has also deemed herself a victim of sorts for not being released in 1983, when she initially proclaimed herself rehabilitated.

I am not a death penalty proponent, and was relieved when it was removed. The court, however, did err in my opinion, when it granted the possibility of parole to death penalty convictions.

You forgot to mention that she wrote ‘Pig’ in the blood of those whom the Manson family murdered.

**No, she should not be released. She was given life in prison for a brutal, sadistic, and socially unacceptable crime. She is in it for the long haul. There is no reason as to why her husband and family cannot visit her. They have those rights. She forfeited her rights when she took the rights away from those she and her ‘family’ murdered. **
 
She has little chance of release.
She’ll die in prison. She can never bring those people back to life. Nor could Manson, Krenwinkle, Watson or all of them put together.
I don’t know what’s right to do in the case of someone who commits a horrible crime under the heavy mental control of a man like Manson, and the influence of a lot of drugs, disease and a recent unassisted birth, who is unimaginably cruel, laughs at the victims’ families on trial, then repents. God does. She’ll see Him soon.
 
I don’t think that she should be released for practical reasons.
In prison she’s get free health care, on the outside someone would have to take that financial burden.
I would lighten up on visitation and perhaps allow her a visit to her parents home.
I know she wants to be free, but she has been cared for like a child all these years.
She has had food, shelter and clothing provided for her.
Also, health care and education.
She has no idea what it’s like to struggle to pay an electric bill.
Freedom brings responsibility.
She is not capable of being responsible.
She still needs someone to take care of her.
