Should the drop of water for the chalice be blessed?

When preparing the chalice for the celebration of the mass, we have to put a water drop in the chalice and the say: ''By the mystery of this water…"

My question is : Do we have to bless the water in the "burette’’ before with put the water drop in the chalice with the wine? I have seen priests doing it!

If yes, were are the refrence for such a practice.

Hi,

No blessing is prescribed by the present General Instruction of the Roman Missal. Therefore, none should be given. Some older priests may still be giving a blessing out of habit from the past when a blessing was very likely given. Other priests who give a blessing are either doing it from misinformation or are simply innovating.
