Should the "Filoque" still be a point of contention?

It’s a term that doesn’t make much sense. If one is first then the others aren’t equal. If all are equal, one isn’t first.

As I said earlier, both versions said in context are correct. It’s when one insists on imputing false context on the other, and won’t let go of it, that things go wrong.

The popes have said the creed both ways, with no conflict.

No, I do not expect a reunion of the Orthodox and the Roman Catholics in my lifetime. I have learned that the differences are serious and many in the minds of the Orthodox.

The Orthodox are already willing to confess the Pope of Rome as first among equals. But the Pope demands that the orthodox confess him as the infallible head of the church with limitless jurisdiction. This will never happen. Even if there was such a “deal” another pillar of Orthodoxy like Mark of Ephesus would rise up and oppose it.(The Orthodox canonize their archbishop Lefebvres).

If you are intersted in the Orthodox side of the story, there is no better reading than the Encyclical of the Eastern Patriarchs, 1848. It describes, in detail, all of the greviances the Orthodox Church has with the pope of Rome including a 15 point condemnation of the Filioque

These posts show that it will not go away as a point of contention. Still, if there was reunion, could each keep its own creed? There are already several different creeds that the church formulated in ancient times that are still used today.

Not a chance. The Orthodox church doesn’t view the Nicene-Constantinopolian Creed as just one creed of many. It is the Universal Symbol of Christian Faith. It is the Creed by which all other creeds are measured. The Roman Patriarchate, under the instigation of the Franks and Germans of the ‘holy roman’ empire, unilaterally changed the creed.

The fact of the matter is that even if Filioque can interpreted in an Orthodox manner it can also be interpreted in a heretical manner which is unacceptable in the universal symbol of faith handed down to the Church by the Fathers for the purpose of seperating truth from error. Make no mistake about it. This is a HUGE deal to the Orthodox and its not going away.

Ok, I have read both links, the Orthodox encyclical against the filoque and the article from the catholic bishops page, and have come to the conclusion that the filoque should be removed, as it is unnecessary and a later addition and a point of contention.
