Should the Hagia Sophia be a Church again?

What are your views on the building? Is it right that it’s a museum or should it be a Church? Do Muslims believe it should be a Mosque? What are some of the Islamic arguments and is there any debate?

I visited this last year on my way home from Europe, its not as well looked after as it should be, so holding large crowds would require it to be structurally sound.

Every year, a group of Christians go there and protest to give it back to the Orthodox Greeks. But of course our tour guide rolled his eyes but when I said excuse me, im Catholic, he appologised, then rolled eyes again.
Istanbul likes to appear as a peaceful easygoing place, but after staying there a few days, you can sense a bit of tension. It will be a very long time before we even think of this being handed over to the Christians again

It should be turned into a Protestant church. Both the Orthodox and the Roman Catholics had it. We are the only branch of Christianity that hasn’t had it yet. It’s only fair.

In all seriousness, it’s odd how many people want to see protestantism (or “Protestantism”) as a “branch (singular) of Christianity”, when some protestants, like LCMS and you’re own WELS, are closer to Catholicism (ICWR) than to Calvinists, Baptists, or Pentecostals. But I digress …

Hagia Sophia was built as a Church so it should stay as a Church. But there are some political issues. Sultan Mehmet transformed Hagia Sophia into Mosque as a symbol of conquest and it has been a mosque for about 600 years. It ıs important for Christianity but unfortunately it is so difficult to convert it in church again while some wish with so highly wistful to convert into mosque. I think as a museum it will be more peaceful.

Many mosques has been destroyed or converted into church in the Balkans.

I believe there was a mosque in southern spain-granada or cordoba, I don’t remember now, that was turned into a cathedral. The muslims qould like it reverted to a mosque and returned to them.

You are right. When I was there two years ago you could see where the plaster was removed and see the images pretty well. It did not feel like a museum to me or even a mosque. It had a very Catholic feeling to me. I wish we could get it back.

Cordoba Mosque(Mezquita) in Cordoba city.

Ottoman built mosques or convert churchs to mosques but nevet destroyed churchs. After ottoman draw back from Balkans 247 mosques convert to church and many were ruined. If you investigate a bit you can find which mosques are converted to church.
 
I’ve seen two threads close in two days due to apologists turning a discussion on Islam into Christianity. Do we honestly need a third?

I’m interested in opinions on Hagia Sophia; not Spain. I’m sure people would be happy to make a new thread about something unrelated if it means that much to turn every argument into one against Christianity.

I was only replying to a post and stating a fact.
 
I never understood why there is an “H” in front of “agia”.

In Greek it is called Agia Sophia… Ἁγία Σοφία

Whenever you see an accent mark over the Greek letters, it is the letter which must be emphasized.

A “rough breathing” over a lead alpha, however, is often transliterated in Roman letters as a lead H.

Is love to see it a church again! That said, if rather it be a museum than a mosque.
