I visited this last year on my way home from Europe, its not as well looked after as it should be, so holding large crowds would require it to be structurally sound.I never hear much protest that the Hagia Sophia was in fact a Church and is now a Museum. I was reading the Wiki article and it seems that there are arguments on both sides to change it back to a specific Religious building.
What are your views on the building? Is it right that it’s a museum or should it be a Church? Do Muslims believe it should be a Mosque? What are some of the Islamic arguments and is there any debate?
Every year, a group of Christians go there and protest to give it back to the Orthodox Greeks. But of course our tour guide rolled his eyes but when I said excuse me, im Catholic, he appologised, then rolled eyes again.
Istanbul likes to appear as a peaceful easygoing place, but after staying there a few days, you can sense a bit of tension. It will be a very long time before we even think of this being handed over to the Christians again
