Should the new translation be used yet?

Correct. There are copyright issues involved that make this date non-negotiable.
Do tell. I was not aware of this issue. I take it the copyright issues are different in Australia?

Brendan:
One thing to keep in mind is that once the texts have recieved the appropriate recognitio, the USCCB has no authority to bind a bishop on the texts.

So it IS possible now for a bishop to give approval to trials. But it would require the Ordinary of the diocese to make that decision. A priest cannot begin using these texts on his authority alone.
I’m trying to recall how the new translation was promulgated - I thought the Vatican gave the national conferences of bishops the authority to regulate the date of release, and thus it would be disobedient for a bishop to delay the date or move it forward.

Since the new translation of the Roman Missal has not been published yet and will not be available until after Oct 1, what is the priest using…an online version he printed out…a bootleg copy…bits and pieces that are in instructional publications? I would say that his use of non official books or papers or whatever is not advised. When I was at the FDLC meeting they were talking about whether or not there should be a book of the chair for the collects since the Missal will be much larger and heavier, and we were told that the Vatican said no, that only the Missal could be used for the prayers of the Mass. Now I don’t know how that fits in with the approved app for the iPad, but it does say something about using approved liturgical books at Mass.

That I don’t know. But there is more than just the text of the Mass (and its publications) that’s involved. Music that relies on the text, iPad applications, etc. all have to be taken into account. Actually copyright laws are a good thing for authors and composers.

Good point. In fact, he can possibly avoid copyright violations by ad-libbing his own material. But then he would be violating GIRM and his bishop by doing that.

Cavete omnes translationes.

You are correct. Silence at this point is NOT part of the new translation. It would have to be someone’s liturgical innovation.
Sigh… I believe you, but I find this frustrating because at Ash Wednesday mass we were told that, starting that day, silence was being incorporated into the Prayer of the Faithful because it was being called for with the new mass starting at Advent. The priest told us it was part of a new focus on sacred silence… We’ve been doing it ever since… Are we in error here?

Nothing is changing. Silent prayer after each petition has been an option since 1975 and remains so. Few parishes that I’m aware of have made use of that option.

1975 GIRM 47. (…)The whole assembly gives expression to its supplication either by a response said together after each intercession or by a silent prayer.

2002 GIRM 71. (…) The people, however, stand and give expression to their prayer either by an invocation said together after each intention or by praying in silence.
