Should the Pope "apologize"?

This whole situation is the definition of irony. The muslims lash out in VIOLENCE because the pope said their religion is deeply rooted in violence. If they truly were the religion of peace, then they wouldn’t have reacted like that.

I’m shocked that no one has voted that the Pope should unconditionally apologize.

We have a lot of Muslims in this forum. I would have thought that someone would be here to represent the Fundalmentalists.
Most times they speak up they get disrespected. I’d imagine it’s not encouraging. I would also say your equation of Muslims with fundamentalists is erroneous. There are fundamentalist Christians; does not make all Christians fundamentalists.

I am no fan of Christian fundamentalists, but I don’t fear that they will kill me. There is no equating them with the Islamic variety.

I selected…

No, Muslims should apologize to Christians for persecuting them.
Pope Benedict XVI said nothing wrong. He has nothing to apologize for.

I have to confess that Pope Benedict has greatly surprised me. I can remember a time when I was actually nervous about him before he became Pope.
Ditto. I think Benedict is brilliant, frankly.
Should/coudl/would the Pope apologize to Satan??? :whacky:
You sound like my friend. Gosh! Someone tape her fingers to the wall!

Should the Pope “apologize”?
No way! He was too soft I think. He should have come right out and said more- that we pray every day for your conversion to Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church and Islam is a false religion invented to counteract Christianity’s truth on the Holy Trinity and Deity of Jesus Christ.

Contrary to many media reports, Pope Benedict XVI did not apologize on Sunday for his September 12 discourse at the University of Regensburg. He did not retract his words, and did not say he regretted his speech. Unless, of course, you consider an apology his expression of remorse that some misunderstood him, took offense, and reacted violently and irrationally, thus proving, ironically, the accuracy of his original thesis; that cultural dialogue is a pipedream unless all sides reject religiously-motivated violence.
I can understand the journalistic misread. Many surely think that Benedict, as a German intellectual, must be as hard to understand as Heidegger, Hegel, or Kant. Maybe they skipped the reading and took the easy road of juicy sound bites. But Benedict is no typical German intellectual. He’s so smart, and his thought is so refined, that he can be simple, profound, and precise at the same time. What he says, in its full context, is what he means, and much to the consternation of those who would like to offer their altogether unique interpretation, there is no need for fancy hermeneutics.

Communication is a difficult skill, and it tends to be inevitable that misunderstandings and hurt feelings occur when we attempt to communicate about things which are deeply-felt and held very dear. For such misunderstandings and hurt, yes the Pope should apologise. And Muslim leaders, for their portion, ought also to apologise, since many of them seem to have greatly misconstrued the Pope’s intent and many ofthem seem to have inflamed needlessly the feelings of their own followers–which they should rather have sought to mollify and calm rather than provoke.

Sorry I could not take part in the poll as it was constructed. Too many false opposites.

I have never heard any Muslim leader or Muslim apologize for anything at anytime anywhere.

Never gonna happen either. They see apologizing as humiliation and weakness. It’s really sad to think about all of the people who are oppressed by Islam that have never heard the Word of God.

Since when is stating facts backed by empirical evidence something to apologize for?

Hi All… Absolutely not! But the islamic clerics and other fanatics should apologise for their death threats.

The Islamic terrorists are Fundamentalist Muslins. I’m willing to say it’s a fact. They’re most definitely extremists.

I’m not implying that all “Fundamentalist” people are terrorists. Just Muslim. Your average Muslim on the street is probably quite peaceful.

Without going back and reading ALL fifty something post on this thread… could someone -very simply- state what our holy father said that was so offensive to the Islamic people?
