Should The Pope Visit England? [CL]

Is England Anti-Catholic?

This is a troubling article from the Catholic League on the Pope’s possible visit to England in September 2010:

I was especially disturbed at the mention of so many people taking back their vows of Christian baptism (don’t know if that’s the proper way to say it). I have to wonder what could possess someone (no pun intended) to renounce baptism. Most people just drift away from their faith but don’t go to such lengths to get rid of it.
The article also questions the Pope’s safety in visiting England. I didn’t realize things were so anti-Christian there.
Can anyone shed light on this situation?
 
England isn’t anti-Catholic really. It is very apathetic toward Christianity in general and particularly toward the Church of England. After all, the British people must pay their taxes to support the Church, what else need they do?

I’ve read earlier versions of this story before. No one whom I’ve read seriously believes that Dawkins, Hitchens et al. have any legal standing to have the Pope arrested while in the British Isles. That’s silliness worthy of them.

But it also provides Mr. Donohue another chance to get HIS name in the papers, doesn’t it?

I realize Bill Donohue is a no-holds barred kind of guy, but I give him credit for standing up and speaking his mind.
Regarding attitudes towards the Pope’s visit to England, I found this article:

It seems like the media might be blowing things out of proportion on this, although in one part of the article it says this:
In Italy, La Stampa reported the story under the headline “Too much humour, we’re British”. It described the proposals as “intentionally absurd” but said the memo “certainly hasn’t helped improve the anti-papal feeling that certain sectors are trying to feed in Great Britain ahead of the pope’s visit”.
As to the “De-Baptizing” part of the Donohue article, I found this:

It seems that people in other countries are serious about this as well. Very distressing.

All of the information has been in the media prior to this letter-it’s nothing new. Rather than being a publicity stunt, I think it is more likely the kickoff for a fundraising campaign to “respond to the crisis” and to justify paying for Mr. Donohue’s trip to England to “get the facts” and “support the Holy Father”. No different than the typical televangelist.

Well said.

The Holy Father will be welcomed the catholic faithful will draw much comfort from the visit.

Ive not noticed any anti catholic feelings here - but I can tell you straight the rampant homophobia and racism againt muslims knows no bounds in numerous Essex establishments.

Frankly, Id rather be a christian here than a muslim or homosexual.

Of course, but times change and people in general are a lot more lax in their attitudes toward religion. Catholics marry Protestants all the time. People don’t bother to get married at all, just live together. How common was any of this 50 years ago?
This is off topic but a similar example is the Catholic attitude towards Freemasonry. The Church is officially against it, but how many people do you know that are aware of this and why it is. The secularization of society as a whole can blunt the edges of certain kinds of prejudice.
 
Don’t think there were any problems when JPII visited the UK.
 
JPII’s visit was before the predator-priest scandal broke. Especially the one in Ireland. there are a lot of Irish in England and it’s easy to travel from Ireland to England. Benedict may not receive a warm welcome from the Irish in the UK.

Do not let the article trouble you. The Papal visit is proceeding despite protestations by those against it. Those who call for the ludicrous attempt to arrest the Holy Father already suffer derision from many quarters over here and would have been forewarned about inciting religious hatred. It is expected that there will be protest groups when the Holy Father comes but, I assure you, Catholics will be across the road from them.

As to anti-Catholicism…I just looked out of my window and the sky has not fallen.
 
From what little I know of this Pope, I don’t think controversy will cause him to change plans. And I do believe Catholics will be there for him.

Hitchens, Dawkins, and their kind are just old guys who are going to shuffle off this mortal coil sooner than later-I wouldn’t want to see the looks on their faces when they come face to face with the Eternal Judge!

From what I have read, most of the citizens of the UK are *indifferent *to Christianity and not anti-Catholic as such. They are sick of the Christian churches and aren’t lined up behind Henry VIII, just like the citizens in Spain and Italy who never heard of him, and are sick of the RCC in their countries too. There are loyal Anglicans and members of the various denominations and a lot of angry Irish who aren’t going to give the pope a glad welcome, but not a lot of anti-Catholic, (vs. “anti-Anglican”) feeling as such.

And the bloke-in-the-street probably hasn’t even *heard *of Dawkins, Hutchens, et. al.
 
There were people who were against him coming to the US last year…what difference does it make? Let him go; JPII did in 1981 and the current Pope should, if not must, go. There are plenty more Catholics in the UK who’ll appreciate seeing him now than before, from all the Poles, Portuguese and Italians that emigrated there in the past 30 years.
