StMarkEofE:
And on conjecture, if a 3rd Temple is built whose to say whether or not God will accept any sacrifices from it even though the Jews are ignorant of the Incarnation and Messiahship of Christ.
God didn’t accept the yearly sacrifice for at least 40 years before the destruction of the last Temple, as recorded in the Talmud. That is, the signs that accompanied the acceptance of the sacrifice did not occur at all during that period (it had been off and on prior to that). Orthodox Jews claim that this was because of the deteriorating morality of the Jews during that time, culminating in the Temple being taken away. Apostolic Christians, obviously, have an alternative explaination, centering on another event that occured 40 years before the destruction of the Temple.

In other words, from a Christian perspective there would be no acceptance of the sacrifice simply because those things are done (not because the Jews are in any way forsaken), and the final Sacrifice has been completed. Orthodox Jews will have a different perspective on the matter, varying from person to person.

Peace and God bless!

I don’t see why anyone would want to rebuild the temple. Is the nation of Israel going to return to making animal sacrifices? I doubt that there is even much interest there in such a thing.
Actually, there is: Preparations for a Third Jewish Temple

BTW, the Dome of the Rock sits where the Temple was located, not the Al Aksa Mosque, which is a separate building built near to the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount. The Al Aksa Mosque is located over the old “porticos of Solomon”.

I believe that that original building that is now the Dome of the Rock was first built as an octaganal shaped Catholic Church, whch has been redecorated with Muslim mosaic tiles, not unlike what the Muslims did to the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople.

The Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount looking from the Mount of Olives. To the right would be where the Fortress Antonia was located. To the left would be the porticos of Solomon where the Al Aksa Mosque now sits.

The Temple Mount - the Haram-esh-Sharif**The Dome of the Rock ** (Arabic, Qubbat al-Sakhra) is one of the architectural glories of the world, and the only early Islamic sanctuary to have survived intact. The design of the building is basically Byzantine - double octagonal ambulatories encircling the Holy Rock. A shrine and not a mosque, it is the third holiest place in Islam after the Ka’aba in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina.

The al-Aksa Mosque, at the south end of the Temple Mount platform, was last rebuilt in 1035 and has since undergone several restorations - most recently in 1938-42; and again beginning in 1969 to repair extensive damage from a fire deliberately set by a deranged Christian tourist.

The design of the building is that of a basilica with a narrow central nave flanked by six aisles (14 aisles in an earlier 8th-century phase). The decoration of the mihrab (prayer niche) in the south wall was a gift of the Sultan Salah al-Din (Saladin). The beautiful inlaid cedar wood minbar (pulpit), also donated to the mosque by Salah al-Din was destroyed in the 1969 fire.

A stairway in front of the north entrance to the al-Aksa Mosque leads down to a vaulted passageway and the walled-up Hulda Gates, which had been an entrance to the Temple Mount Platform at the time of the Herodian Second Temple.

This group is a fringe group even among Ultra-Orthodox Jews, who are themselves a small minority of the Jewish people. The overwhelming majority of Jews, and even moreso, Israelis want nothing to do with a third temple. Most are secular and don’t believe in it. Those who are not secular believe that the temple will be rebuilt only when God ushers in the Messianic age, and people cannot do that by themselves by rebuilding the temple.

Joseph, you obviously have a really low opinion of the Israeli government. Do you honestly think they would be so foolhardy as to even attempt such a ridiculous undertaking knowing the outrage which would come from Islam? Why don’t you post a new thread “Should Haghia Sophia be returned to the Eastern Orthodox”?

How do you know that? When I lived in Israel, I asked some “ordinary secular Jews” if they would like to see the Temple rebuilt and the animal sacrifices reinstated. I was surprised to hear these secular Jews say that they would like for this to happen. They are, however, not interested in starting a war with the surrounding Muslims nation to make that happen. Even the Jews at the Third Temple Institute aren’t interested waging a war to gain control over the Temple Mount.

Interestingly enough, the Turkish Government is turning the Hagia Sophia into a museum, and they now in the process of stripping off the Muslim mosaic tiles and restoring the underlying Christian mosaics.

There are some among the Orthodox Christians of Europe that are pressing for the government of Turkey to return the Hagia Sophia to the Orthodox Church as a condition for joining the EU.

Question:

From a Christian point of view, wouldn’t any attempt to rebuild the temple be the work of the anti-christ?
Can I quote myself earlier 🙂

*Yea the Muslims would have a fit, but the Temple rebuilt is a goal, what do you think the whole brew ha ha is all about over there? So if the Temple is allowed to be built somehow on or near the site, wow what a Man would be, that could arrange such a feat. Wouldnt he be famous . . . *

Not necessarily - it could be justified as a canny ecumenical move 😃

Who knows - maybe St.Peter’s will become the Temple 🙂

I dont know the Hagia Sophia but this is a interesting example. All these little puzzle pieces going together here and there, very interesting.

Hagia Sophia has been a museum since the 30s but if they are now removing those great Muslim discs and restoring the original mosaics, wow! Hagia Sophia is to the east as St. Peter’s is to the west. Do you think they would take the minarets down?

I just get real tired of these sanctimonious “innocuous” postings as if any pragmatic Israeli would even conceive of starting a war over the Al Aqsa mosque when the greatest church in all Christendom remains a mere museum.

The point is there wont be a war over it, if its agreed upon the archetect will be that savy leader or will become a leader because he would have acomplished what many have tried but none can do, achieve peace. btw the jewish view of Messiah is one who will do such a thing to restore Temple.

Of course it makes your neck crawl, it should. Mind you it wont last because the Prince of Peace isnt in charge of it.

Im not sure on the church you mean but if its as you say then why should they treat the church any different than they treat Christ? We dont like it but it will change one day of that we know.

What is the point of rebuilding the temple in the first place? I wont usher in the final days, but it sure will add to the ill will that is now in place at this holy site.

If they continue in this restoration of Hagia Sophia it would be wonderful but for the fact that it wont again become a place of worship for the Eastern Orthodox. The minarets are only window dressing, they dont need to be demolished. If the turks are serious they should allow the Holy Liturgy to once again be celebrated. This truly would be a wonderful day in Byzantium.

Im not saying the Temple should be rebuilt just so we are clear. Im saying there are those that do.

*According to the prophets of the Bible, amongst the most basic missions of the messiah are:

to cause all the world to return to G-d and His teachings,
to restore the royal dynasty to the descendants of David,
*to oversee the rebuilding of Jerusalem, including the Temple, in the event that it has not yet been rebuilt; ** to gather the Jewish people from all over the world and bring them home to the Land of Israel,
and to reestablish the sanhedrin,
restore the sacrificial system,
as well as the Sabbatical year and Jubilee.

Now as for the ill will, if it does go that the Temple will be rebuilt there will be no war in fact there will be peace across the world.

It will be a fake peace by a fake christ because the Prince of Peace Jesus has not made it.

You cant be serious here. The Palestinian Islamists and Hamas and the whole of Islamic world will no doubt have a lot to say about a Jewish Temple being built on the site that the Muslims believe Muhammed assended into heaven.

Or, are you referring to the Pentecostal view of the end of the world?

That having been said most eloquently, can we not go back to the OP premise and decry it for what it is? - i.e. another act of provocation?

To the Islamic world it IS a provocation and nothing less. To think that the Muslims would idlly stand by and allow this Temple to be built is pure folly. This is totally fantancy on you part. It isnt going to happen.

Nope. I guess I wasn’t clear. The OP was trying to provoke a reaction from us, Mark. It would be an act of extreme provocation to even contemplate a third temple on the Temple Mount. I think our Jewish brethren have enough grounding in rational thought to realize that. What I was trying to bring out was the hypocrisy of the “fly by night” original poster’s post. The Jewish people cannot claim that which is theirs anymore than our eastern brethren can claim Hagia Sophia. The second temple was destroyed almost 2000 years ago. Hagia Sophia’s demise is only a little over 500 years ago. P.S. Don’t you realize that there are genuine Latin Christians who are on your side?
