Should the YouCat be recalled?

I read the first three objections and find them very narrow in scope. The petition seizes on a phrase and does an overblown theological analysis of it - which is sometimes not even consistent with Church teaching (the section of evolution was particularly egregious).

Catholic Answers distributed a booklet, Pillar of Fire, at World Youth Day some years ago. I’m glad it was not subjected to the niggling scrutiny that the Youth Catechism is subjected to in this silly and petty petition.

Seems like any attempt to make something relevant and accessible to youth specifically is treated this way. It’s almost as if people don’t want “those darn young-un’s” in their church…the sad this is - it’s working!

The reasons put forth for why it should be recalled are pretty big stretches that I personally find no objection to. Just more nit-picking based on faulty assumptions. 🤷

These objections sound like they come more from protestant fundalmentalists than from concerned Catholics.

The petition is vague about who is sponsoring it, with the only identifier being in the press release.

That document quotes a person from an obscure organization called Restoring Truth Ministries, LLC. A quick look at their website shows that they hold to some rather extreme positions. I wouldn’t trust their evaluations of YouCat or anything else to do with the Catholic faith.

RTM’s website can be found here restoringtruthministries.org/
Which extreme positions you were refering to?

The site repeatedly makes sweeping and slippery statements about history and beliefs which are highly questionable, but presented as “just so.” And some of the statements are seriously misleading, e.g.
Restoring Truth Ministries:
Thus, while some in the Church consider evolution to be a non-issue, any informed student of history will admit the link between evolution theory, the rise of anti-Christian worldviews, and the moral relativism now engulfing America and the western world that threatens, as Pope Benedict XVI states, to put all under a “dictatorship of relativism.”
But we know that Pope Benedict is not opposed to the teaching of evolution and does not believe that it leads to a “dictatorship of relativism.” Here is what the Pope said regarding the supposed clash between evolution and the Christian understanding of creation:

Pope Benedict said:
“This clash is an absurdity because on one hand there is much scientific proof in favor of evolution, which appears as a reality that we must see and which enriches our understanding of life and being as such.”

I posted this to get a evuluation because I hear that Youthcat is good from some and that is is not good from others.

I am more confused than ever. Perhaps just as well I don’t read it.

God bless.

That was my thought. I think this Catechism directed at young people is a great idea. If the Catholic Church ever raises an objection, then it is time to recall it. Until then, the Church is the one in authority over catechisms, not lay bloggers.

I agree pnewton, The Catholic Church will decided one way or the other on this one.👍

My thoughts, as well, Paul. Maximos and Anastasios? Qualifications? Furthermore, the petition requests that it be recalled before “yesterday,” August 16. So it is already being distributed at WYD.

There have been strident and repeated attempts here at CAF to strike at the Youcat, and these proselytizers have been banned - twice!

Little One, with all your extensive activity everywhere on this board, how is it that you haven’t found the good threads and comments from those who own the Youcat and who fully support it? Try this one.

To All,

Here’s the link. youcatrecall.com/

Read it carefully and then vote.

Are you guys going to sign the petition?

God bless.
Have done, if I remember correctly they already had to cancel or re-do the translation into a few languages as it appeared to teach that condoms were acceptable for catholics to use. I really don’t see what the need for a ‘youth catchism’ is, go take the Baltimore catechism or Catechism of St Pius X and update that.
