Should there be actions taken to improve or even control immodest dress at mass?

We are all sinners, so no one could enter then?
We’re supposed to acknowledge we are sinners, then do our best to correct our behavior and stop sinning, right? Or are we supposed to say, “I’m a sinner” then throw our hands up and not try to change?

Too funny!

I just think it is sad that so many Christians really miss the boat by focusing on insignificant issues. And by doing so, they get a "Holier than Tho’ " attitude and their eyes and ears are not open to being used by Jesus as an instrument. If they weren’t so preoccupied with the rules, the Lord could maybe actually use them and their enthusiasm to show the “misguided” person love and understanding. Maybe they could talk about their issues instead of shewing them away at such an impressionable age.

And for the older people that happen to dress"inappropriately" for church. Hey you probably don’t know their story either.
------50years of addiction------poor------maybe even a sex addict that thinks that is what love is-------who knows. Again, I think Jesus is simply happy they are there in His house listening to His words. And He probably would be appreciative if his children were not being judgemental but instead welcoming and forgiving to all.

Have a nice day and smile with love in your heart next time you see someone not dressed the way you think they should be dressed.
Things can change one person at a time.🙂

Flipflops are immodest??? Sure, I agree with the problem of immodest dress- I have quite a few daughters. But some of this is a little overboard. Khaki pants and a polo shirt qualifies as ‘dressed up’ for DH, and after 8 kids, I can’t afford fabulous wardrobes in 4 different sizes, plus maternity clothes. This topic can (and for some of the posters, perhaps has) easily descend into examining other people’s consciences, rather than one’s own. The best thing to do after Communion is to close your eyes so as not to be distracted by others walking by (unless you have a 3 yo that slides under pews until she can make a break for it! but we have plenty of threads for that topic)

3 suggestions for a priest who wants to improve the way his parishioners dress: 1) Teach the congregation about the Real Presence. Anyone who really believes that Christ is present in our church, will dress for the occasion a little better (but ankles, ears, upper arms and knees are no longer likely to drive a man wild, so we probably won’t get back to 19th-century dress codes).
  1. Crank up the AC.
  2. Bulletin notice, announcements, etc. It should have an effect on some, and hopefully others will start to feel out of place.
I gotta say, I’m sleeveless in the summer; if my 44 yo upper arms and knees are an occasion of sin, the guy has some problems that my wardrobe just can’t solve.😃

We have discussed immodest dress and appropriate dress on this thread even though the ORIGINAL post was indeed about MODESTY.Ya know like in the Ten Commandments modesty.Flip-flops might be inappropriate Doubtful they are immodest. But that’s the topic of a dozen other threads.

For the life of me I cannot figure out WHY a girl/woman can’t just wear a shrug or sweater or wrap a big ol’ scarf around her if she insists on low-cut and/or strapless apparel.I volunteer to knit shrugs and shawls for any woman who needs one.Just for cryin’ out loud cover up already.

Is it immodest for men to not wear a shirt at mass on a hot day? Immodest, or just bad taste or too casual?

It’s always immodest for a man not to wear a shirt except for at the beach or the pool IMO. In fact it’s my number one pet pieve even over cleavage short skirts and mini shorts…I hate that men, and society as a whole, think it’s OK for them to take their shirts off anytime anyplace. It’s not bad taste or too casual it’s just down right immodest and ill-mannered.

Thank you for your post! As a man I wholeheartedly agree with you. You have every right to be appalled. I hope allot of men take note of your feelings and pass them on to other males in their families!

I am not sure how we can change the dress code in church when strapless bridal gowns are allowed in most churches.

The bottom line is, are priests afraid to lead? We really need strong religious these days.

I agree wholeheartedly. No man who runs around without a shirt on has any right to talk about women being immodest. It is always embarrassing and often quite disgusting.

I believe people should dress modestly in church. I’ve seen bra straps sticking out of sleeveless blouses, bridesmaids dressed like Paris Hilton, cleavage, etc. But you know what? I’m training myself to try not to look too closely at people in church anymore. How they dress or act is not going to get to me. I get prideful and also get discouraged if I start mentally criticising them. I’ve been back in the church for two years and I never want to leave it again.
If someone’s dress or behavior are offensive to you then I suggest you tell them tactfully.
As for me, I’m not looking anymore.

HisGrace,

I don’t think you’re looking at the bigger picture which has already been discussed to death in this thread. We are not in the Garden of Eden now, so we cannot wear fig leaves. We don’t live in Africa where they (in some remote parts) do not wear much clothing (according to their culture). We live in the west. MOST people are not stupid. Most people know that attending Mass should be a holy thing. It SHOULD be a place to worship Jesus and to witness to others that we care about how we AFFECT other people, i.e., our dress, our demeanor, etc. That’s the bottom line. Unless a person has mental issues, that’s a different story, or if the person is poor - again - a different story. For the general public - just cover yourself appropriately. 😃
Just to add, that type of clothing is distracting as well. I know that as I was watching these children in the mass that I explained earlier in this thread, that some of the men (younger men) were so distracted by what these girls were wearing that they did not get anything out of the mass. That is not what mass is all about. So, I agree with mom4truth. I think that if you have proper clothing to wear, then wear it. We are in church to hear the word of God and to receive God, not to see who we can distract. It is a matter of respect!!!

Muslims are allowed to take part in the poll ?
I hope so, I’m a Baptist and I took the poll 😃 .
I didn’t think Muslims would have any people dress immodestly during worship service (or at any other time). (Of course, I could just as easily be wrong about that.)

I want to wait for the approval of the thread starter.

At mosque , we have separate prayers rooms for men & women . Till now , at mosque both men & women come covering from head to toe --even those who don’t cover properly at other time.

But when the generations of dish culture will start attending mosque , don’t know what will happen then.

may God help us all to understand that ** faith is more imp than fashion** ( a line from the song veil ) ,

Amen.

Honestly, I never gave your question a thought. As a ‘frustrated’ Catholic, I was originally reaching out to fellow Catholics about attendance specifically at mass…which the poll addresses. I do find it interesting though, to hear from other religions about the respect shown in their perspective places of worship. The awesome respect shown to God by these others surely put allot of Catholics to shame! We, who supposedly believe that God is not only present in our liturgy but physically present in His Body an Blood…should be ‘leading’ the world in modest dress…especially at our liturgy. Personally, I have great respect and admiration for Muslims who take definitive action concerning modest dress. You seem to truly value ‘chastity’. I have always believed the Muslims will in the long run play a major role in ‘returning’ the western world to a sense of decency through their example. I must say that I do not approve of the abusive tactics I have read and heard about that are used in many instances to enforce the dress code because I believe we must always guard God’s gift of ‘free will’ to all mankind, but that is a whole different conversation. In answer to your question, I suppose your voting in the poll cannot ‘hurt’ the results, but again I cannot help but wonder if you can truly grasp the point of the poll, which is to bring about ‘change’ and/or restoration to ‘Catholic’ liturgy. I guess if you have an opinion about the way our liturgy should be attended, your vote is most welcome! More than that, I would love to hear your opinion!!!

betra:

Glad someone sees the bigger picture. Also, thanks for your addition info. I agree with that 100%! 😉

I guess , it’s better if i dont take part in the poll.

😃

Hope my opinion won’t hurt anyone’s feelings. Personally I don’t know any Christians except online . I see/ saw Christians on the TV screen .

I saw in some documantiries / movies how Christians women wear dress inside the Church. I did not like the wedding gown the bride wore …too revealing .

In Islam , wife’s beauty is for her husband only ( & the vice versa ) . So , a bride’s showing her physical beauty to all … I found it unacceptable.

Also , in a news report , I saw young girls wearing very tight pant , T Shirts …I did not like that either . May be , I am too conservative 😊

Yes there should be a dress code. No shorts, strapless tops, bare shoulders, low cut tops, flip flops or inappropiate t-shirts. One young man wore a t-shirt to our church that said “Unix is God”. A young woman wore a shirt with spaghetti straps and I could see her tattoos!

I have sent my son back to his room to change when he wore something that was not appropriate for church. As for sports team gear, I am a huge Cubs fan, but I would never wear Cubs gear to church.
