I am in RCIA and will be joining the Church this Easter Vigil. I have heard that it is recommended that we fast until after the Vigil Mass, but that it is not required. I would like to have dinner with my family as we will not be together on Sunday. What are your thoughts on this?

When I was in RCIA we were directed to eat before the Easter Vigil Mass. The Easter Vigil Mass can take two hours or more, depending on how many Scripture readings are included during the liturgy, and the last thing the parish wanted was for nervous RCIA candidates with empty stomachs to faint during the liturgy. Go ahead and have dinner with your family before the Vigil Mass begins. The fasting requirement is one hour before Communion (not before Mass), which is more than fulfilled on Easter Vigil if you finish eating shortly before the liturgy begins.
