Should we accept today's pope as Peter's successor?

I have a question regarding the list of popes. It seems the “official” list has Anacletus third, but others have Clement third. My protestant friend uses this to show that there is not uniformity among those who ‘should know’, so why should we accept the succession from St. Peter as we have it today. If it was/is such an important position, should not there be no error?

According to the original Catholic Encyclopedia entry on this topic, “There is every reason to regard these differences as due to the errors of copyists”.
