Should we ask God for charismatic gifts?

Hi,

As far as I know, St. Paul says in one of his letter that we should ask for the charismatic gift of the Holy Spirit (e.g. tongues, prophecy, etc.) Where is the passage that he says we should desire and ask for these gifts? How do you know these gifts are authentic and from God and not something self-generated? Where in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Scriptures are the charismatic gifts discussed. These things make me feel a little uneasy, because it almost seems like magic, but it is fascinating when someone truly is given a gift like these from God. But what I am cautious of is people who seek attention and such, because they want to be seen as having a special gift or something. Please pray for my fellow parishioners and students at my college Catholic Center to have an authentic understanding of the charismatic gifts. And if you know of any paragraph numbers from the CCC or Bible passages on the charismatic gifts, so that I can read, pray over, study, and discuss them, let me know. I want to know what gifts the Holy Spirit provides, because I think in the absence of these charismatic gifts, sometimes people seek out the supernatural in the occult, in magic, in science fiction, etc.

But please pray in addition to providing any catechesis and Biblical references.

God bless each of your souls!

Yes, we should ask of him for those gifts, but God can only give those gifts if it is according to his will for your life.

Sadly, sometimes that which masks itself as charismatic gifts are really the occult… whatever you do, beware of “Charismania” and emotionalism as the driving force. If there is one gift that should be sought, but seems to rarely be sought, it is the discernment of spirits.

I’m honestly not sure what the correct answer is, but I personally do not feel comfortable asking God for gifts of the Holy Spirit. I feel better simply asking the Holy Spirit to renew me and aid me. If God wants me to have a charismatic gift He will give it to me, but otherwise it makes me uneasy as well to try to SEEK such gifts.

In the rosary one of the graces are gifts of the Holy Spirit so I think it is okay.

When God calls you, you will know it clearly.

The thing to pray for is humility–a lowly and contrite heart, and a willingness to listen. Praying for special gifts is, to my mind, presumptuous. Praying for God’s inspiration and guidance to apply the gifts He has already given you in the service of others is a more humble, and proper approach.

Hello joshrp,

I guess the forum moratorium on discussing the Charismatic Movement is over?

After years and years, I have found that the charismatic experience is heart felt, so make sure that you are in a position in life where you can afford to be emotional and partially suspended while you worship.

I really enjoy worshipping that way, but there is a time and place for everything.
