Should we bring back vergers?

Sorry it’s even necessary. Such disrespect!

In today’s environment when people will go into churches and shoot up the celebrants, I’m afraid something like that and more may be needed.

But, it’s just too bad …

Therefore, the Church is a target for leftists protestors and for Protestant fundamentalists.
I think a lot of Fundamentalists have come to realize the Catholic Church is all that stands between them and the strong arm of a resolutely secular state that is not especially friendly toward strongly-held religions. I live in a sea of Fundamentalists and Evangelicals, and I have heard them admit that a number of times.
In general, I agree. The vast majority of them now have the view you shared. But I still find the random anti-Catholic fundamentalists online or on a street corner.

When the World Meeting of Families was in Philly, we saw a handful of these anti-Catholic Fundamentalists protesting the Catholic Church the entire week

We have fascists, communists, and anarchists in the UK, but I don’t think they have any interest in attacking Christians. That may be the difference.

We are often told by our Security Service that the greatest threat to our internal security is from the far right. However, I doubt that the Catholic Church is a serious target for them. We do have some Polish churches, and it’s very possible that they could be targets of far-right terrorism, but they would be targeted, as other premises have been, because they are Polish, not because they are Catholic. For the most part, the far right is concerned with attacking Muslims, Jews, ethnic minorities, and the LGBT community.

British communists are not generally violent. As illustrated, they are actually somewhat ridiculous. The real danger posed by the British far left is entryism. I am sure that they are not interested in attacking churches. They do tend to be rather anti-Semitic.

I’m not sure exactly who counts as an anarchist, but there are certainly people with anarchist tendencies within groups such as Extinction Rebellion and Occupy. They are a nuisance. They damage property and they disrupt essential services. Occupy London did cause serious problems for St Paul’s Cathedral, but that was because they set up a camp outside the cathedral, simply because the cathedral is in the middle of the City of London. The protestors actually made it clear that their protest had nothing to do with the cathedral, apart from the fact that they happened to camping outside it.

There is a Jewish synagogue just outside Pittsburgh, PA that was the victim of a terrible mass shooting back in October 2018.

I’m from the Diocese of Pittsburgh, and even though it was a very isolated incident, I still am uneasy over it, especially when attending our diocesan cathedral.

The diocesan cathedral is the mother church of the diocese and is therefore the “face” of the Catholic Church in Pittsburgh for both Catholics and non-Catholics alike. This allows it to be highly susceptible to incidents of hate and malice for those that want to make a statement. There are usually two armed security guards at our cathedral for the weekend liturgies. I cannot speak for the weekday liturgies, as I haven’t attended.

I’m even a little leery in my home parish, which is located in a less-than-ideal suburb. There is a lot of unrest these days, so I am all for increased security. I mean, my parish is one of those “everyone knows everyone” parishes, but that doesn’t mean something bad can’t happen. Look at the Amish schoolhouse shooting back from October 2006.

Yes we should, as long as they are carrying a real stick and not some Halloween prop. It is not for show.
