Should we offer 10% of our earnings to God?

Hi,

Im born Catholic. One of my protestant friend has been telling me to offer 10% of my earning every month to the church. I told her that i have been helping the orphans in an orphanage. She told that apart from charity or helping others, we should offer 10% to the church.

Could you please help me with this.
