“take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.

When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites 2 do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.

But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,

so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.” Matthew 6.1-4
Ive always wondered about this, is it wrong to do acts of kindness so that others may follow your example? I have some issues with this. Im outspoken and am always the first to crack a good joke in a group yet I partake in acts of kindness/charity that people dont see because I want to follow what Jesus said. Problem is that people never expect me to be a decent person and are usually surprised to find out im catholic let alone a decent person who devotes her time to charity work when she can. Im not expecting a medal and i could not care in the slightest about receiving recognition for my work but is it wrong to tell people about your work knowing youre an influential person and when it can lead others to do such work? Should I be lying about where I go when I am engaging in righteous work?
