Should we receive Communion while in venial sin?

If we committed a venial sin prior to Mass, may we go on up to get a blessing instead of the body and blood of Christ during Communion? I was told that we can just go ahead and receive Communion, but I feel rather obliged not to. It just doesn’t seem right to me. Am I in the wrong?
 
There is no obligation to abstain from Communion while in venial sin, and indeed reception of the Eucharist can forgive venial sins (CCC 1394).
