I was wondering, should Catholic sing praise and worship music with references to Jehovah? Are we singing to the god of Jehovah Witnesses? There are some popular Christian songs that use Jehovah as their reference to God. What do you think?

Thanks,

Chris

There are many names for God, but there is only one God, and He is the same God for everyone, although our impressions of Him differ. Do you think He would be confused if you called Him “Sam”? He knows who you’re calling, He speaks the language of our heart. kind of reminds me of that viet nam era movie where the soldier thinks Gods’ name is Howard. “Our Father which art in heaven, Howard be thy name”. Trust me, God will hear you what ever you call Him. To insist on any particular name, or even to favor one particular name seems counter productive and divisive. We in the western world call on the name “Jesus” however in His original (human) language, there is no “J” is there? Do you think He can’t hear us because we translated His name? Just my thoughts.
May the peace and love of our Lord, Jesus the Christ, be with you always.

"Jehovah" is a more modern word that dates from about 1520. It is comprised of abbreviated Hebrew verbs. It would most likely mean “he who will be, is, and has been”. ** The proper name of God the father is the ancient Hebrew “Yahweh” which means “I am” as stated in the book of Exodus. Here’s a good article from the Catholic Encyclopedia: newadvent.org/cathen/08329a.htm**

I think the origin of the term is a bit earlier than 1520, and the article you link to seems agree that this date is too late - but it is only off by a few hundred years. “Jehovah” is a poor rendering from scripture (created by a Catholic monk ) of “Yahweh.”

actually, the term Jehovah is a technical name that God gives Himself in the Bible. In fact, God titles Himself by MANY different names in the bible. God, Yahweh, Yeshua, Elohim, Jehovah, etc. The Jehovah’s witnesses dont worship a different God, they simply commit heresy when it comes to their teachings regarding Christ and God.

The term Jehovah is as catholic in nature as it is protestant. it originates from our bible after all.

I would disagree that JW’s worship the same God we worship. There are so many differences between our God and who they call Jehovah. For example - His plan, His people, the way He communicates to His people, His love (conditional), Who he’ll accept in Heaven, How to please Him - What He requires of His people, When he grants forgivness - oh the list goes on. Unless you are willing to say that the God we worship is the same God everyone worships - in a Universal sort of sense - then as a former JW, I have to respectfully disagree with you.

I *think *- it’s a long time since I read this - the earliest citation is from 1457 🙂

The point is there is one God, if the JW’s perception of this one God is wrong. It doesn’t change God, it changes what they think He is. To say they pray to a different “God” is to say there is more than one, there is not. You may say His name is Sam, I may say His name is Howard, what you or I call Him doesn’t change Him, it just affects you and I. Example three religions, yellow, blue and green. Yellow believes we should kill each other since we’re different And, they use Gods’ Word to justify it, blue believes we should love and accept each other since we’re all “brothers” and they also use Gods Word to justify it, green believes somewhere between the two, they all worship the same God, each of their perspectives are different because each has been exposed to different situations with the one true God. I was raised in a family of four children, we each believe different things based on our own individual lives, we’re not all correct, but each of us thinks we’re correct.

Carol marie, I’m chuckling as I write this, please understand, I’ve read many of your posts, I’m not picking on you, well, maybe a little… but in a loving way…

So you believe there is more than one God? Doesn’t sound like Catholic doctorine to me, just what is your religion??? (LOL) How could they worship a different God if there is only one?

Well, I’m certainly glad, you are a “former”, and I firmly believe you’re in the right pew now, however I’m sure there are some who feel you’ve made a terrible mistake. My point is they don’t praise a “different” God. God is one, He is the same, it’s our human minds which create the differences. Which is one of the problems with JP II, he understood there is only one God, despite our individual ideas of Him.

Oh, i’m not saying that they worship correctly or that their views towards God are necessarily right. In fact, i don’t even consider the JW’s to be christians, since they don’t recognize the divinity of Christ.

Rather, my point was that Jehovah is a name God gives for Himself. Does the fact that Mormons have incorrect beliefs about God mean that we can’t use the name God either? or maybe since the Jews don’t worship under the new covenant then we should forgo calling God Yahweh. The point is, Catholics don’t cede the titles of their Lord, nor their traditions and beliefs, simply because some protestant or other religious group copies them. Albeit the use of the term Jehovah is much less common in the catholic church than the JW, it is still a term that originated in Catholicism.

Paul,

“Jehovah” and “Yahweh” are two different attempts to transliterate the Hebrew “tetragrammaton” which consists of four consonants generally rendered “YHWH.” Others transliterated it as “JHWH.”
So, to say God revealed Himself as either “Jehovah” or “Yahweh” is not exactly accurate.

Hi Tom,
I guess my problem with the idea that we all pray to the same God is that it seems like such a slippery slope. I agree there is only one TRUE God - but I think alot of people reject Him & instead follow their own idea of who “god” is. Often these groups (JW’s included) have rejected God’s Son Jesus - and have replaced him with their own version (in the JW’s case - an angel) So they’ve made up their own “god” - they’ve made up their own “Jesus” and now they sit down to pray. Is the True God listening? Why should He - they aren’t talking to Him. They are talking to someone they’ve made up.

How is what they have done any different from what the Israelites did when, after they were led out of Egypt, rather than worshiping the One True God, they made the Golden Calf, called it “god” and worshiped it? Just as their false worship was unacceptable to God, so to the false worship of those who invent other “gods” is unacceptable to Him.

I agree that there is only One True God - but sadly, many have rejected Him and have decided to follow someone different.

Tom,

I reread your post. I don’t think you & I actually disagree - we are just arguing two different points. Because I agree that there is only One God - and I’m certain you would agree that the JW’s are way off the mark in their idea of Him.

God Bless,
CM

To the original poster, Just because some cult uses a name for God that we also use, does not mean we should stop using it.

To this poster, you seem to be saying that everyone who professes to worship “the one God” is worshiping the same God. Yes, there is only one true God, but you are not allowing for the fact that people may worship a false god, or a demon as god for that matter.
It seems arguable that the JWs are worshiping the same g(G)od as us, the Mormons too.

Absolutely.

Jehovah is a erroneous conflation of two Hebrew references to God: using the vowels from Adonai (Lord) with the consonants from Yahweh. Ancient Hebrew was normally written without vowel marks, and since the name for God (YHWH) was not spoken by pious Jews, they wrote the vowels for its substitute (Adonai) above it. Scholars in the 16th century, not knowing this system, rendered the name for God “JeHoVaH” [using J for Y and V for W]. Below are some etymologies confirming this.
Some translations are better than others. Jehovah is a mistranslation. I would counsel not using it.

I don’t think we should try to judge that others are refering to a different “god” (which doesn’t exist and so is really nothing) if their description of God differs, even wildly, from the truth. It is far better to assume that they are talking about and to the same God we are, but that they are mistaken about Him. I started another thread on this, and I think it has been argued to death concerning Muslims.

Ok… so this is my understanding… Jehovah is a mis translation… it is okay to use in our worship, it still refers to God of the Universe… but when choosing music we should use a more common refrences to God, such as Yahwah or Abba Father… etc… right? but to use a song with Jehovah once in a while is not wrong or bad? correct me if I am wrong… thanks… chris…

Jehovah is a mistranslation, and for that reason I would not choose to sing a song with it in the lyrics, but I may be more picky than others. I would think it bad or wrong. Others on this thread have said they think it is OK. To whom will you listen? You still have to decide for yourself what is right. That doesn’t mean whatever you decide is right, but even if I tell you what is right, you have to decide if I am right.

I have strong opinions about this, but I don’t think it is a matter of grave heresy. Is there a compelling reason you just really have to or want to use a song with Jehovah in it? Can the controversy be avoided? Will it cause scandal to those weak in faith even if it is not technically wrong?

I had some Jehovah’s witnesses at my house yesterday and I felt no problem discussing God with them. I thought of it this way, Spanish people would call God ,Dios and even if they had the wrong idea of God I believe there is only one.
I wouldn’t really use Jehovah in our worship as I am not used to the name, but I will use it to dialogue with other faiths to promote better understanding.

God Bless
Scylla
